Re: Just got this engine for $1300

I would do some spot quality checks.

Some easy spot check examples:
Verify dip stick level indication correct.
Verify lifters adjusted to spec.
Verify #1 TDC lined up correct.
Verify >50psi oil w/ drill prime.
Verify oil flow to valve train w/ drill prime.
Verify head bolts don't turn when torqued to spec.
Look closely an intake end gaskets/RTV.
Note quality of gasket/RTV application.
Drop pan and verify all crank bolt torques.
Verify oil pump bolt torque.
Verify crank clearances w/ plastigauge.
If all pass and I'm feeling lucky I'd consider startup.

I recommend you put a starter on it, a ring gear and compression test before you do anything much just yet.
If the numbers come out nice and fairly even, then I would proceed with all the fun stuff!!
Good Luck, keep us posted!

Re: Just got this engine for $1300

Start with a cylinder leak down test. It will tell you far more about the condition of the engine than a compression ever will.

Re: Just got this engine for $1300

Hi tim, i thought i was the only one to use a cylinder leak tester! 10% loss or more equals more checking and possible trouble. Is my memory correct? I just joined a week ago but you must have worked in repair shops also, as i did. Brian F.

Good price on that.
It's difficult to get a good gasket seal on those chrome parts. If you "rough up" the mating surfaces of the chrome parts with fine sandpaper, the sealer will get a better bond. Otherwise plated pans, and front covers notoriously leak.
