4L60E rebuild parts

I guess when the rear diff went out on my 98 last month the transmission felt neglected because it just decided its not really feeling the whole shifting from 2nd to 3rd thing anymore.

I'm seriously broke. I'm also terrified of backyard cheapo trans rebuilds and junkyard oem units I don't know the history of. So I'm thinking I'm going to try this slowly by myself. Tons of books, video's, and people out there who have done it before so hoping I can manage lol. Anyone have some input on parts I've selected? Its not a HP build. Stock engine that I don't plan on putting more power into.

-Rebuild kit. Who should I use? I do want 7 clutches in the 3-4 pack like a 4l65. I remember clineberger talking about using 8 maybe 9? Man I miss that guy.
-sonnax smartshell
-29 element dual cage sprag
-wide reaction sunshell bushing
-pinless accumulators
-servo, corvette or perhaps sonnax
-I've seen talk about a new sonnax 2-4 band but that requires a new reverse input drum, not sure if its something I really need?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Any of these parts just for strength? I don't need em. I just want maximum durability/reliability.

Re: 4L60E rebuild parts

I would go down to the local transmission parts place and buy a standard rebuild kit. If you are beating on it there's no reason for all those 'heavy duty' parts.

for the newbie I like Paul Zank's Videos

Re: 4L60E rebuild parts

Some great advice from my buddy over on the Impala SS forum. He knows the 4L60E inside and out, he builds them at home:

Re: 4L60E rebuild parts

So I've been researching this whole time and have narrowed down what I want from this rebuild.
My biggest thing is I want the 7 friction 3-4 pack from the 4L65. Can I just order a 4L65 rebuild kit or do I need to buy the clutch pack seperate and still order a 4L60 rebuild kit? Otherwise I'm only adding a sonnax smartshell and TCC repair sleeve, some pinless pistons, and a new reverse input drum and 3/4 apply piston. I don't need extra power handling, I just want another 200k miles out of it.

Re: 4L60E rebuild parts

Do you have a local transmission parts place? Likely you'll need steels and frictions if you're going aftermarket on the 3-4. Maybe they come together? I don't know.

4L60 and 4L60e kits are different

I don't need aftermarket on the 3/4 clutch pack. 4L60 is 5 fictions, 4L65 is 7, 4L75 is 8 all from the factory. If I wanted aftermarket I'd just order a Z pak but its $80 so I was hoping to save some money if I can just order a 4L65 kit that would already come with the 7 frictions.

Re: 4L60E rebuild parts

Likely you'll need the correct steels also as there is a restricted space the clutches and steels must fit in. Sorry I am not familiar with the 65-75e

GM changed that 3-4 stack up several times since 1982.

Re: 4L60E rebuild parts

7 friction 3-4 Clutch stack.....

*3-4 Apply Plate.....GM# 8685044
*3-4 Backing Plate....GM# 24212460
*6 .077" 3-4 Steels
*7 .080" Hi Energy Frictions (I prefer Borg Warner)

If ordering a .080" Borg Warner friction module.....You will need an extra .080" 3-4 friction as the module only comes with 6.

This is NOT a 4L65E set-up, 4L65E uses .065" frictions & .097" steels, The frictions are too thin in my opinion & have had better success using .080" thick frictions.

If you want to run a 4L65E friction module & steel module, You will need.....
*3-4 Apply Plate.....GM# 24217451 (Stamped HD)
*3-4 Backing Plate....GM# 24212460, This is a guess on my part as the Backing Plate is selectable & I don't use 4L65E stacks enough to know exactly what the clearance will be. I like .025"-.030" clearance.

Selectable 3-4 Backing Plate dimensions.......For reference if needed.
*24217450 .144" thick
*24217453 .165" thick
*24212460 .194" thick
*24217516 .219" thick
*24217517 .241" thick
