Longhorn 160 degree question
Longhorn, Do you can any heat blowing in the winter or do you swap thermostats in the fall?

I do have to swap, that is the only bummer on the 160 degree. However, it is only 5 min of trouble.

I would think the 160 would be like running no thermostat at all.

no, with no thermostat, the motor is able to overheat, with a 160, it stays at 165 to 175...no higher at any given time. Towing in Tx, or sitting at a train crossing...
It reduces vapor lock, gives better gas mileage, and makes more power. Also, it lowers oil temps, which is great in it's self. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. and the only reason people do that is when they don't have a cooling system that is up to thier motor and climate.

you should be able to get higher milage with the higher temps if it's set up right. Vapor lock sends a signal though, seems your fuel line routing is in need of a revamp.

My cooling system is spot on. Put a 190 in it, and it might get to 210.
If you make more power without introuducing more fuel, you should get better MPG if you sty 'out of it'. A cooler engine will introduce a cooler intake charge, which makes more power. Dynos prove lower temps = higher h/p. Why you think the performace chip companies recomend a 160 thermostat? ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. I switch mine. 160 summer, 180 winter. The 160 will still provide enough heat in the cab in 30-40 degree temps.

I have also used a 160 in the heat of the summer. With the aluminum heads,the longhorn does fine on a 180 stat,(175 on the road,& 185 in town). the aluminum tosses a lot more heat off........69

I'm goin' to try a 160 now to see what it does in my 402. With a 180, I run about 190-195. It's worth a shot. Thanks for sharing.
