Snakes

A guy I know is selling a Python. I have always wanted a snake but I know very little about them. I've never owned one.

My wife had a Python and she said it was an escape artist. It would break out of its aquarium and slither up in the heater or behind the stove. No matter how much she secured it. It would still get out. When she moved it had escaped again and she never did find it. The new tenants might have got quite a surprise.

So. I'm not so sure about it. I want it. But.....

Re: Snakes

Depending on the type of python many types can grow up to 20 feet in length. Any python that falls into that category I would not consider a beginners snake!

There are some dwarf pythons and smaller species which are relatively easy to care for but I still would recommend other snakes for a beginners snake. The enclosure the snake is kept in needs to be large enough for the size of that snake. Many snake keepers believe that the enclosure should be the length of the snake on at least one or two sides. in other words a 6 foot snake would need at least a 6‘ x 2‘ enclosure or at the bare minimum a 4‘ x 2‘ enclosure. And even with some of the larger python variants many are arboreal and need height to climb also. There are some great YouTube videos from snake owners and handlers which may help you deciding if owning a snake is for you.

Re: Snakes

Living in South Florida, we are not fans of them here. I see the attraction to them, but they come with some side effects if they get loose.

Maybe a hedgehog would be better

Re: Snakes

Probably not a great idea if you ever have a cat or even a dog unless it's a big dog. When my daughter was young she wanted a snake for a pet. Wife put the kibosh on that real quick.

Re: Snakes

I'm okay with the "bull snakes" or "gopher snakes" we have around here. We actually had to rescue one that got stuck in an old refrigerator that we were using to store stuff outdoors.

But not the rattlesnakes

He was much braver than I ..

Re: Snakes

When my wife was in college we used to go and watch the 8 foot? long python being fed. They would throw in live mice or small rats in the cage and the snake would stalk them and then crush them, then swallow then whole. Not real pretty.

Re: Snakes

Yeah. I think I'm going to pass on the snake. I want it but it seems like a lot of hassle.

When my youngest daughter was little we took he to a birthday party for her friend. The parents had hired a guy with a bunch of snakes. I thought it was odd but the guy put on a good show. The kids loved it.

This guy had a huge snake. I don't remember if it was a Boa or a Python. But it was a big one.

So he calls up the dad's to have this giant snake set on their shoulders. I was on the hook. I got in line with the other dads.

It was a very docile snake. And the kids laughed.
The guy in front of me went up and had the snake put on his shoulders.
Like I said. It was a friendly snake. Not threatening at all.

But.. I think the snake needed a bathroom break. Apparently it had a full tank. Because it pissed all over this guy.

I was glad that he was in front of me in line.

Re: Snakes

Snakes operate on instinct not thought. You ain't seen determination till you've seen instinct. Hence the hard to keep in it's home in your home issue. If at all possible, they will make a way

When I was young my father kept snakes as pets.

The bigger ones got whole chickens for dinner.
