Here's my "new" Sierra, SPID and emblems. Notice the Saddle glove-box color.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Like I stated before my 71 has the Sierra grande on bedsides, custom above door handles, and glove box, but the fender emblems just say v8 2500, not custom or Sierra grande like some of the others shown. Could that be because it's a 3/4 ton?

71/72 2500s and 3500s got the trim level in the fender badge. I don't think any 71/72s got a glovebox emblem except Sierra Grande, just like Chevy Cheyenne Supers

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

So,who wants to list the trim levels available through the years?Do they always follow same lines as Chevy? The '70 Sierra Grande is one exception I know. Is it a CST equivalent? If so,was there a '70 Sierra? Did the Super Custom bump the Custom from mid-level when The Sierra Grande came out in '70? Were base GMCs called Customs in late '70-72 or did they stay nameless?

I heard (can't remember where, will have to dig through old threads) that some or most of the 67 Customs shared emblems with the Super Custom or had no emblem. Further supporting this is that the Script emblem is so rare, even in photographs. I do national craigslist searches for all 67 GMC's and I have not seen another custom script emblem in the last year at but I have seen the Super custom emblem one or two dozens times and not all those trucks had buddies so some were probably customs. I know none of this is solid proof one way or another...Two customs (SPID verified) I've seen have had no emblems but its possible they were removed as both trucks were repainted.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

I've got a ton of history with my 71 Serra Grande. So from everything I've seen this appears to be one of the first to roll off the line. The order sheet shows he ordered it in November 1,1970, and took delivery Feb 4, 1971.
My dash and glove box is painted the same as the dash and the glove box has GMC Custom.
The fender has GMC 1500 V-Eight, the door has "Custom" Script, Serra Grande on the rear fenders.

The interior has the wood grain trim, head liner with chrome trim, interior & exterior cargo light.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Does your interior have woodgrain on the dash with a custom emblem? What color is your interior? I have never seen a GMC glovebox door painted body color.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

The 67 trucks are confusing. Like Jud, I have seen several 67's over the years that had the custom fender emblem that were not super customs by looking at the interior. That emblem must have been part of an exterior dress up deal. I saw a swb 67 in a junkyard a few years ago that had the super custom fender emblem (and the side chrome), but it was just a plain truck on the inside.

No woodgrain on the dash, and it's not body color. Here's a picture.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Sport/Truck,yours is a fine example in more ways than one. I'd like to see other bonafied '71 Sierra Grandes. What I see in your truck is what I've seen in '70s. I wonder when the changes came about...such as wood grain dash/Sierra Grande glove box and fender emblem. Was it later in '71 or '72-only?

As far as I know, base GMCs had no name, just GMC 1500 etc. I'd like to know after Sierra Grandes came out, though. With Chevys the Custom became the base truck once Cheyennes and Cheyenne Supers came out.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Now there's another interesting model. What I know of the Camper Cruisers is GMC put those out in '67-only,only C2500s and C3500 cab "n" chassis, and only on Super Customs. That's what I gather from what I've learned. But...were they all Super Customs? If it's true that some(most?) '67 Customs had that fender badge then could some be Customs that I assumed were Super Customs? From the outside they'd both look the same.

Man gms made this confusing for us to try and figure out 40 years later. There should be books on the history of these trucks like you can buy for any muscle car out there.

My sierra Grande is only a half ton where I notice a lot of them are 3/4 tons. But it has the Sierra Grande on the fenders and Custom above the handles. But it also has the 8-396 on the front fenders and the GMC Custom on the glove box....

It's been 'upgraded' as GMC's didn't come with engine badges (I've got em on my big block too, and they're staying).

What year is yours? Yours has had changes, like the engine badges and the emblems on the bedside removed. Is yours a '70 or '71?

Mine is a 1971. My bedside emblems are still on it. I cant remember if they are on the pics in my build thread or not but they were on it when my father-in-law gave it to me.
