Re: Caps, toppers, camper shells - ONLY!

Here’s a supposed c30 fifth wheel but has wheel covers and I’m uncertain it’s actually a longhorn. From Chevys Camper magazine 1972 Summer edition.

Does look to be too long for standard longbed . Maybe a pre production truck where the added piece was welded not just bolted on

Truly love this post! To me there is nothing better than a time capsule truck, and there’s not enough LS swapped lowered short beds on 20’s to change my mind. I picked up this pap cap from the original owners who bought it in 1986. A lot newer than the truck, but looks pretty good on it.

Re: Caps, toppers, camper shells - ONLY!

A pretty much unmolested truck. Love it. The color combo sure is odd. Not what I would have ordered, but right here and now I love it. It sets that truck off. That paint is in great shape. I think the 250 (not 4.1L) w/4spd and gauges combine with the colors makes the truck all the more cool.

Not mine. This picture has been around a long time. '67 C2500 Super Custom Camper Cruiser

Great photo! '67 was a low production year, not many around that still look like new! Shell popularity really took off along with the camper boom of the 60's. Note, has period clip style 16.5" wheels with correct 3/4 ton caps.

Can be useful on the job site as well, if you chose the utility model. Note tire and wheel setup, the 7.50-16 tires on 16" 2 piece rims, very common in this era when these trucks were new.

^ On that white/hugger orange/white truck, it looks like the inside of the rocker was not painted. Is that so? I want to eventually return my truck to that paint config, as that was original. My FiL got it painted for free, and opted not to paint the lower portion white again. I need the right fender below the lower molding repaired first.

steveedee, I believe that is correct - exterior of the door below the trim was painted with secondary color, whereas the full interior of the door and door sills were painted in the primary color. Here's another example of a special two tone, see pic 4 of this post and you will note the full interior, inner door, and sill are all yellow - while the exterior face of the rocker is medium olive (this truck had a medium olive on the roof and below the lower trim in the Special Two Tone paint scheme originally).

Thanks! That's good to know. I have paint left over from doing the roof several years ago. I shook the can the other day, it seemed fine. 6 year old paint...

Re: Caps, toppers, camper shells - ONLY!

Those California-built aluminum caps always had more angles, added styling. I like the sloped back. A typical design was angled out at the bottom on the sides to start, then angled in to the top. I don't have any pictures.

Here's another typical style. It was later that you saw them built with slanted sides curving into the top with flat front and rear. Straight up sides, curved front was the common design

Here is mine with the later design. It used to have the scroll on the plexiglass bubble windows

Re: Caps, toppers, camper shells - ONLY!

Here is an interesting photo, we get 4 shells on pickups of similar vintage and manufacture. One striking observation is the similar rear stance of 1/2 tons ( both Ford and Chevy) vs. the similar rear stance of 3/4 tons ( both Ford and Chevy) all 4 are 2WD. We see why 1/2 tons are for shells, we leave the campers for 3/4 tons.

I don't know why I didn't try to snatch this one. I can look on FB but I do not have an account or any way to get hold of the folks. This one was about an hour and a half from me and not too bad looking. Hard to find swb topper.

Older shells- here is the one my PiL put on in '73. The PVC rain gutter is there to guide rain water away from the boot, which was leaking. My wife's friends where she used to work told her that the shell could be rebuilt or repaired. I could have, but even if I saved all the aluminum skin and windows, it would have been more money (plus my time) to rebuild it. When she finally came to her senses, we got a new shell.

Do you happen to know how much your camper shell weighs?

Re: Caps, toppers, camper shells - ONLY!

Unfortunately, I failed to ask, when it was installed. It is taller and heavier than the old one, and I get a bit of oversteer, which is especially noticeable when towing my travel trail- even with the equalizer hitch. I'm looking into a rear stabilizer.

I know the bedliner on a 67-87 is the same, so one could assume that a topper would interchange. Since my parts truck is not just yet roadworthy, i did not jump. Plus those domed windows were awfully faded. Not sure how good it would clean up. Anyway, it's gone and I talked myself out of it.

Yep, mine came off a mid-80s pickup. The ladder rack on my '72, which sits on L-channel three sides, I originally made for an '84. Fits right on there.
