Crazy wild '57! That car by the pool reminds me of this one's colors. Not same colors, but...

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs

If you guys are ever in Michigan stop in at the Gilmore Car Museum when they have the Relix Riot Traditional Hot Rod and Customs Show. Pretty awesome show and they have a strict set of rules for entry to keep everything pre 1965.

This is the link to the show website with pictures and info.
http://www.relixriot.com/images/

By the way, loving the pics in this thread. The classic traditional custom cars are awesome! I have some pictures I have taken. I'm going to have to find them and post them.

Sounds like my kind of show. We have a couple like that around here I go to.

Here are a couple early mild customs from one of those shows

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs

I've looked thru this thread several times since special posted it. I'm a custom lover from way back, nearly cried when "Custom Rodder" was absorbed. One of the most influencial rides in my life was a mild custom 53 chevy. I need shop space for a few more and one would be a mild custom, probably something besides a Merc though I like them there's just nothing new to do to them. One complaint I have for the younger people is terminology. They use the term Body Drop", there's been a term for that for years, "Channeling". It always makes me wonder if they are truly car guys if they don't know the history.

I've never heard "Body drop" it's always been channeled. But then again I'm not young. Might explain it.

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs

Man, it's good seeing all these cool customs. I didn't give them much of a look back when I was way younger but now days, I think they are just total cool. What those guys did with less is remarkable. True artisans in every sense of the word.

I was just a (car model building) kid in '61, but I see the late 50s into early 60s as being a time of factory customs. Detroit was influenced by the customs scene. That's what the El Camino and Ranchero are. It was all about style features and going modernistic. Styling departments were going apesh!t. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bring a few goatee wearing beatnick artists on

Dig

Beatniks were the real gone cats of the beat generation. It was coffee houses, attention to the arts, they were the first rappers, avante guard, all during the customs era. The world have black white grey square man and these cats gave it flair. Thing Ed Big Daddy Roth, early surfing, Maynard G. Krebs... you know, Dobie Gillis?... Uh, blabk & white TV?... rabbit ears?... clicking through the channels?... All 3? Are you the fuzz, real square, or just real Gonesville?
