We are rocking 4 hours of daylight per day, and it is currently -19* out there as I type this. I am in the interior/central Alaska though. Not sure how things are in the coastal towns....

Oh, 4 hours of daylight I don't think that I could handle that... I'd be falling asleep all day... and at -19, I would be sleeping in front of the fireplace

Stay warm!

OMG

now that's too cold... I remember a few sub-zero days in Chicago when I was 8 or 9 years old. I couldn't imagine -34, of coarse I know a few people that couldn't imagine +120 which I have worked outside in...

I'd love to experience it on like a vacation though... There is hope that I will take a trip in the next few years, but most likely will go in the spring.

+120 = Iraq
If you come up here they have a place that has a display they keep at -60 for tourists to experience the winters up here. So far it has only dipped to -40 this winter, but the cold months are ahead of us yet.

You should come in Spring!! It is really beautiful up here for that season and it lasts until September when the snow starts falling again .....

The four seasons up here are
1. Winter
2. Not Winter
3. Dark
4. No so dark

there you have it !!

LOL

A coworker went on the trip last spring and had a blast. We are planning a group trip with some friends to save money. The plan is 2013 or 2014 so we can save up the money. My luck, it may be 2015.... But we are going to make our best effort so we can to get there sooner.

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

Well, I have decided on my dash layout

I'm going to start with the first layout and then eventually move the gauges to the instrument cluster and add a trans temp gauge which should look like the second layout...

I will have to remove the choke knob and move the wiper and light switches over to the right one spot to make room for a horizontal vent

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

That looks cool!
I just started on my guage cluster.
So far I have rebuild my odo, and 000000 it out. Last weekend I started on my knob omit project for the guage frame, my knobs are going other places.

Hope you take lots of pics on this transformation, looks like you are a week or two ahead of me on this part and I would like to see how you get it done!

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

After searching these forums for a couple days for lengthening the booster rod and mounting the booster, and running the lines, I ran across a post by you that lead me to your build thread.
Thanks for all the pics.
They help a lot.
I got all my stuff off a 79, so I will be doing it the way you did.

Work has been killing me and never have spare time to work on the truck... I did finally find time to get the engine/tranny resealed and back into the truck. I plumbed the brake lines and buttoned up the front suspension. It just needs an alignment and bleed the brakes.

I need to get the drive shaft shorten due to swapping in the 700R4. Also need a new dip stick tub as the one that came with the tranny has a split in it...

I also modified the AC compressor mounting system so that I can install my 14" air cleaner. The original location for the compressor was on top and to the right of the bracket and put this compressor on top of the intake right in front of the carb. I mounted the compressor on the opposite side and used a bracket to put the adjuster bolt on the left instead of the right. Looks much better now and my air cleaner has plenty of room

Of coarse, if I had a second 66, one of them would get the full treatment if I had the money

Hi Cort, I actually made a decal from clear shipping label paper by scanning the original instrument back plate into photoshop and cleaning it up for printing. I painted the backplate with tan paint and then cleared them after installing the decal . The hardest part is getting the decal on straight as it sticks too well... Thanks for the comment

Here are a few more pics that I haven't posted yet.

Tony
I like it a lot.
For some reason my eyes find the white print on the black background difficult to read. I can see your black print on the light tan background a lot clearer.

Cool I'm glad it was helpful. That's what I like about this site, great info and ideas, sweet rides, and cool peeps

Looks like you got it mounted up. Looks great. I notched my steering column plate to clear the bottom right booster bolt hole and then drilled the firewall for both bottom bolts. It's pretty solid.

I have to remove mine again to repaint... The master cylinder startd leaking from the back...

I love what I did on this. It reads so clear and looks sweet

It's the main reason why I want to keep the original gauges in the dash. I'm pretty proud of myself on how they turned out. Many people think that they are Autometer

Lol, I actually have two extra sets, but one is missing the speedo needle... I was thinking of doing another restore on one and using the other for parts. If I do decide to part with it, I'll let you know

That would be great! - I actually only need the panel, not the gauges, so I'm not worried about them.

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

Well, it took forever but I finally got the dash done except for paint and moving the gauge pod to center up with the radio

Now I just need to get the fuel tank out of the cab and I'll be ready to strip and paint the interior this fall when it cools down

Oh, and I also crafted a 69 Camaro gas pedal to the stock rod. This is alot more comfortable than the stock floor mounted pedal

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

Beautiful work on your truck, it looks great! I am about to tackle the problem with my gas tank: gas fumes filling the cab. I will need to replace the rubber filler tube. Have you done this before? Any pointers you can give me about moving the tank away from the filler opening so I can work on it? I was looking through the forum and did not find anything. Any help is appreciated.
cheers.

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

Well, it's been like forever since I last posted here. Been dealing with health, money and work issues the last year. Not much done on the truck lately, but hopefully that will change for 2014...

I did get my 76-72 rear bumper installed finally and also made a hidden hitch (modified a factor hitch receiver).

Here is a pic of the bumper installed. I'll post hitch pics shortly.

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

I took a 1992-2000 Suburban/Blazer/Pickup factory hitch and modified it to fit the 66.

I got it at a local swap meet for $20 and spent about 30 minutes grinding down the welds from the mounting plates to the main tube. I repositioned them to fit the width of the 66 (moved them in ~ 1 1/2"). Tacked them in place and checked fitment which turned out perfect!

Welded her up and mounted to the frame with grade 8 bolts. Marked out the 67-72 plate holder and trimmed with a cut-off wheel.

I used a repo GM flip down license plate holder that I got off eBay for $20. I mounted it so it flips up so that the plate can still be read with the hitch in use.

I had a 10 1/2" long ball mount that worked, but ordered a 12 1/4" long one to give me a little more room between the plate and trailer to be safe.

Now I just need to get my air bag setup done on the axle to help level the load and will be ready to tow...
