Mirror bracket questions

Does anyone have a reliable source of information for what below the eyeline tripod mirrors looked like on trucks with NO trim? Was it like the yellow ruck posted? Or were they also a little higher with a tubular top brace that attached at the sill like the blue and white truck?

I have no trim and prefer the look of the yellow, but want to know what was factory. Thanks a lot

This post from SS Tim seems to show a photo of the bracket in question, or is this the larger tow mirror?

I would guess that the location would be the same in both trim and no trim trucks. Here is another thread that shows the factory location on a truck with trim. Similar to your trim pic above.

The one on the yellow truck is not GM. The one on the blue truck appears correct for 72s only. The 69s-71s used the type in the link posted above. From my observations, there were actually 2 different versions of the 69s-71s. The differnce is just a slight curvature added to the legs early on to clear the top molding when it became available. I have a set of each of those (just a comment, they are not for sale). Attached is a picture of the correct 72 mirror that a I found for a member last year. Note the tubular top brace and acorn nuts.

How can you tell for sure the yellow style mirror is not factory style? It seems to be similar to the 69-71 you mentioned in the photo. Does that photo show the mirrors mounted lower than the blue trucks, or am I imagining that? The picture from the manual SS Tim posted isnt good enough to tell for sure if the top brace is tubular.

The link in my earlier post is a factory 72 below eyeline mirror. I believe the 67 to 71 mirrors had longer lower brackets that attached between the upper and lower moldings.

Flat upper brace instead of tubular, curvature at the base of the legs not correct, bolts instead of studs and acorn nuts to hold the elbow to the tripod and mirror head. The head may be right, but I can't tell without seeing a picture of the back. It's also mounted wrong. Note that the top brace should be attached to the top of the door. It doesn't appear that the flat arm is bent to accomodate the proper mounting position.

Just for reference, I've attached a picture of my 69 with the 69-71 style.

Is your top brace mounted to the top/flat part of the door? Yours look larger than the eyeline style to me, are there multiple sizes?

This photo SS Tim posted shows the top brace mounted several inches below the door (as in the position of the yellow truck), was this position correct on any year, regardless of flat or tubular upper brace? I am under the impression this is the standard position for non-trimmed trucks. I may be missing something really obvious here. Thanks a lot for the help guys

Sorry! Yes, I did zoom in to give better perspective. My 69 is the below eye line mirror as they were in 69-71. Same DG4 option code. They were, as you noted attached with the horizontal brace lower and had much longer legs.

They are stainless. I polished them using a buffer and compounds from Eastwood. The original elbows were chromed solid steel with studs for the acorn nuts. The nuts themselves had a dull finish as shown in the picture in post 5 above. The nuts and elbows were badly rusted and the studs broke off when I tried to remove the nuts. The elbows shown were from a later GM product and are stainless. They were tapped for bolts so I made studs from 3/8" stainless bolts and screwed them in. The only acorn nuts I could find that had the same appearance as the originals were chrome plated. Overall, a bit more bling than the original, but I'm pleased with the outcome. The originals were not as highly polished.

In the interest of full disclosure, the elbows on mine (from a 79 van) have a shorter horizontal arm than the originals, so they pull the mirror head a bit closer to the truck which I prefer. However, you can find stainless elbows with the correct dimensions.

Here's a picture of one of the 72 style I did for a forum member, but these were done using regular stainless bolts and the correct size elbows. The acorn nuts look better and more original to be.

I love these mirrors and eventually would like to go with them on mine someday. They're the only ones that are both useful and look good on these trucks IMO.
