Molding massaging!

So, I’ve been dreaming of trying to put Custom/CST molding on my dually since 2004 when I got it, and even moreso in 2007 when I put the dually bed on it. Today I finally tried it, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. I going to change how I mated them together where pieces on the humps meet the ones on the bed when I do the final ones that are going on the truck, but other than that, I finally figured out how to bend it without kinking and distorting the molding. It required cutting little slits in the back side of the trim (where the clips go under) about every 1/8th of an inch to let it bend freely.
It was painstaking (read: a pain in the butt!) and time consuming, but I’m happy with the end result!

IDK - My dream has always been to build a truck that looks like Joesjunk beautiful '68 C-30 - but with a bed. Realistically, at least in the short term - I'm probably going to paint it satin black and put the bright grill trim, headlight bezels, side trim, and tailgate trim, chrome bumpers, and drive the fool out of it. High level black paint isn't in my budget at the moment!

I have thought about (and talked to a shop) about scanning a piece of that moulding and getting a wrap strip made of it.Kinda thought it would work well but have not tried it yet.

Yes, I’m still going to do the ‘67 fenders. They are in better shape than these, plus it will get rid of the marker light.

That looks awesome. That is my favorite c30 trucks right there. you did that right. I'd be proud to drive that just as is. Paint would only make it better! I've had my build for over 10 years myself. Cool things take time to perfect.

Oh yeah, I know your truck well! That is an awesome build - I love the clock!

This thing is finally coming along. I pretty much most everything sorted out under the hood. I've driven it a few times and it is very torquey with the NP435. It will actually break the tires loose very easily when it spools up. I'll do a in cab video of going down the road. I have to finish the exhaust, if I stick with this turbo (thinking about doing a Holset HX35 swap!)

Here’s some pics showing how they look close up and how I was able to bend them. Contrary to what I thought, the piece on the rear part of the stepside had a much harder bend, and it required 3 cuts up in to the molding. It’s on the bottom and you don’t see it at eye level, but you can see if you are on the ground looking up.

For me, it’s not a problem since I’m going to paint mine with Mirrachrome, I can fix it with a little filler. If this was a brand new molding, that may be something you’d either have to touch up or live with. I don’t think it would make that bend without the relief cuts, unless you made a die to bend it. Overall they look good and will look great with a little more work. (You can tell I tried these on some of the dullest, uglier pieces I had in case it didn’t work!&#128514

The cuts I had to make in the rear. On the first one I did I had 2 or 3 got deep enough to just barely see from the top. You can see a tiny half moon in a spot or two, but by the time I got to the second one I figured out the depth I needed to go and you can’t see them.

This was the piece that I had to get up into the molding on the bottom. Without them, I couldn’t get it to not to try to kink.

If I had to cut to begin with, I don’t believe I would have had the tuckered looking where the cuts are. It had already began to kink before I figured out I needed. I believe I can do it without that on the other side. If so, I’ll probably redo this side also.

I'll do that. I should be able to get someone to film it for me. I'd honestly like to hear a clip from outside the truck myself. The turbo makes a lot noise inside the truck. I think that custom 4" discharge housing really helps in that area. This engine didn't sound like this with the stock cast iron 6.5L turbo discharge housing.
