OEM 68 Chevy fender problem

I have a set of near mint 68 fenders . I welded up the molding holes as it’s going on a stepper after I was done I stripped the fender and found two cracks near the cowl mounting bracket . Is it a normal occurrence or not ? None of my other trucks have it as far as I can see. I’m going to weld them up but it seems strange

Stress cracks from core support bushings being bad?

Re: OEM 68 Chevy fender problem

They did come off a truck that was lowered , very poorly I will add. The guy I bought them from bought the truck and proceeded to have his body shop redo it . He bought all nos sheet metal. Shop guy said he was crazy as all the sheet metal was really just as good as the nos stuff

Re: OEM 68 Chevy fender problem

I checked my '68 fenders just now, and there are no cracks in that location.

I went to a local GM-only truck show last weekend and I saw quite a few trucks that were so low that they had no inner fenders despite the fact that the inner fenders are a significant structural component of the front clip. Did your truck have inner fenders installed?

Re: OEM 68 Chevy fender problem

The big bolt/washer that passes through the square hole in the back of the inner fender and threads into the firewall provides a significant amount of lateral bracing for the outer fenders.

Re: OEM 68 Chevy fender problem

Were there any scuff marks on the underside of your fenders? Maybe the tops of the wheels were bottoming out on them when hitting bumps in the road.

Not that I noticed. I’m thinking the lowering and the fact it had a 8.1 in it may have stressed it a bit

Primed and painted the white on it today . Block out the rest and tape and spray the color .

Re: OEM 68 Chevy fender problem

I'm thinking they are rejects, meaning this happened from the stamping process. Maybe stretched thin

I would think rejects that didn’t pass quality control never made it out of the stamping plant . It’s a mystery . I bought these because they had the triangles in the front that the early stamping had
