Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Much appreciated !

More pics if you want to see. When we bought the truck it didn't have an antenna on it at all. There is a big gaping hole in the fender (bothering me pretty bad) So, the first thing we added was a new (original style repro) telescoping one.

The ole cowl looks pretty clean! Dad found a piece of the original antenna retaining bolt that may have broken off over the years (?) Who knows .. but it looks a lot better.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I bought it off the forum actually, it came from GMC Pauls and the guy had bought it and just never used it. New, in the plastic wrap for $50 shipped. They are $79 at GMC Pauls, plus shipping. I offered $45, he countered at $50.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Dad and I started working on the paint on the ole GMC on Saturday. The first thing I noticed about this truck when I walked up to it is the orange peel. The paint is pretty decent on it but it looks like dry spray or maybe too much paint overall (?) The final coat looks heavy to me or it was just never buffed out.

I'm pretty particular when it comes to stuff like this. I won't be able to paint this one (at least not for a while) but I want to make it look as good as I / We can. I started the 1500 cut on Sat, just a little buffing on a wool pad / swirl remover on a light foam pad and it looks incredible. The passenger side bedside is coming out really nice. We're actually picking up some reflections now. We're just lightly wet sanding the peel off of it and man .. it is way better than I expected.

I'm thinking maybe polished Coys now (?) .. we'll see I guess.

Just now saw this yes we are okay the bulk of the storm was a bout a 1/2 mile north of my shop it picked up a pair of inner fenders that I had laying out back and blew them upside the house, a couple of small trees down, but other than that we were lucky.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Got a chance to do a little rubbing over the weekend Dad and I have the passenger side looking a LOT better, the picture of the driver's side is how it looked before. The paing is decent 'driver' quality. It is just single stage black, probably painted in the mid 80's if I had to guess. While definitely not perfect .. I think we did pretty good.

It had quite a bit of orange peel on it. In fact it was one of the first things I noticed when I walked up to it the day we bought it. .. Not anymore !

Keith (lolife99) .. the big ole mirror is gone (pass side) You wouldn't know of any good stainless mirrors around would you? .. hint .. I have a good driver's side arm, I just need the mirror heads and a good pass side arm.

Check out the shine now !!

How did you know I bought a used passenger side sport mirror last weekend?
Who's telling you my secrets?

I need to look at it better.
I have no mirror heads.
The only time you need mirror heads,... is when you have repop mirror bases, that let the heads fly off going down the highway. Ha.

I have a NOS set,... but I want to keep them.

Oops,... I guess you need the 67-70 mirror arms/heads,... not the 71-72 sport mirrors.
My mistake.
I usually just buy new round mirror heads from Classic Parts of America.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Let me know if you want to part with that mirror arm, or know of any more around (?)

I color sanded it with 1500, got 99% of the peel off of it but the paint is a little thin in places. You have to look for it but I was really careful with it .. it just adds a little patina character to it. 3M compounds, wool pad, then swirl remover on a foam pad, hand waxed .. It's coming out nicely.

Thanks for the compliments!

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Question -- I have some parts money and about to start moving along a little.

Considerations -- I am going to convert it over to wood bed. The bed in the truck is pretty rough really. It has some rust up near the bottom edge of the front panel and it is slightly dented. I am thinking I will replace the front panel. The floor is pretty rough around the edges and the back stake pockets. There is a golf ball size rust thru spot in the front floor area near the bed and in the back near the tailgate. Both seem to be a common area for rust. I have already purchased a good set of inner tubs for it (from Crazy Ray in CA) The ones in it now are a little rough around the bottom edges. They get replaced with good GM ones.

At some point it looks like someone tried a cheap bedliner in the truck. It is a metallic silver. I am not sure if they put the bedliner in and then painted over it? .. but it is peeling off now. Looks worse than it really is .. but it bugs me. It looks like it has rubberized caulking in the front to give the bedliner something to bond to (?) But it looks pretty bad. My guess it has been there for 10+yrs or more.

Here's what I'm thinking. If I pull the bed off and Order / put the new front panel, cross sills and wood (of course) in it first thing, that means the bed is out of the way. I can pressure wash the frame rails and paint / detail the frame while it's off. The floor will be easier to replace while the bed's off too

Once the bed goes back on, as I collect some more parts money .. I do the suspension, wheels / tires.

Should I do the bed and detail the frame rails first, or drop it now and put all my new parts on the old dirty frame?

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

The only thing that I would try to accomplish while the bed is off is the Cnotch if you are installing a notch at all. Everything can be done with the bed on but the notch is a little easier with the bed off. Just my thoughts.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Ok, .. kinda what I would rather do anyway

How about 4 wheel disc. Should I cough up the extra and just do it now? I have to change axles, take the whole rear end apart etc. to drop it .. I'm thinking I just spring for the extra $ now and just go ahead.. I can't do Wilwoods or anything, just maybe the McGaughys kit, something like that.

The way I have it figured up, I could have it dropped and wheels / tires around the first of May. I'm having to save here and there to keep the wife happy.

My wife is from Recife Brazil, born and raised but her parents are Taiwanese. (yes, she's smokin .. ) Her sister is still in Rio, .. so she wants to go see her in the next couple months. Yeah, so I have to budget for that too. Brazil is cool, no doubt .. but it will slow down the truck some.

Looking good! I personally would do as much as possible when the box is off. At least as much as the budget allows. I hate laying on the ground and access is sooo much easier with the box out of the way.

i agree with that do as much as possible while the bed is off, and dont put nice new parts on an old ugly frame, look at how the did the the Angelo service truck just pulled the motor/ front clip, gave it all a great cleaning (looks like they wire wheeled it ) and painting and slap it all back together , and it looks killer !

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I would leave the drum brakes on the rear until you have more budgeted money.
You can always do disc brakes later.
Install new axles and seals now.

Those backing plates can be cut off later, to avoid disassembly of the rearend again.
Rear disc brakes will cut into your "cool wheel" money. Ha.
