Re: Custom bumpers

Just read this entire thread and that was a lot of money for someting that you had to redo. Yu are very nice. I would have demanded all my money back or I would have sued his A$$. Any updates? Are the new tubes welded up? I bought a similar bumper that was on a 75 K10 for $50 used and will cut it up to make it work on my 68 C10. Would like to see yours all done.

Re: Custom bumpers

Wassssuuup

For your rear bumper are you going to have a swing out tire carrier? I can't remember if you said so or not?
Anyway if you are, I recomend using this spindal, it can carry the entire weight of your carrier.

The one I used was rated @ 1K Lbs, it's basically a trailer spindal.
My 4xclub's website is down so I cannot post pics of my setup right now.
The main part of my bumper is 3"x8"x6' square tubing. \ cut the left then /cut the right. Before you cap the tubing you can weld up the spindal & frame mounts inside & out.
Anyway food for thought
Burt

Re: Custom bumpers

Right on Burt. I have absorbed every piece of info from you so far! Thank's for all the help, I really like your rear bumper setup. Any more info on that spindle setup would be cool, as I do plan on the spare carrier. Before you gave me some info on the design, But I'm a little slow! Got a good welder friend, so just need to decide how I want it to look and function. Thank's again for all the advice!

Re: Custom bumpers

Burt, where did you get that spindle for the carrier? Thinking that looks like the way to go and could use a link to find the parts. Any more info would be great! Thank's, Bryan.

Re: Custom bumpers

Well at the time 4x4iron.com was an online friend of mine from the old days @ CK5 and he sold DIY kits for K5s. Basically he lazer cut the 3"x8"x6' main peice then shipped it to me with all the peices of steel I needed to weld it up. It was a very handy kit but his biz didn't survive the test of time.
Anyway this guy has them:
http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm

Years ago I bought a rockrod (beefed up tierod for D44 front) from him but I have not bought anything lately. RockStomper has been around for years and I would buy from them again if needed.

Re: Custom bumpers

Went back again and searched. Found bigbadchev72's thread on his rear bumper. Really like the looks of that one. I just need some ideas on how to add a spare tire carrier like Burt4x4's to the design.

Re: Custom bumpers

Well every picture tells a story and I ain't got no picturs anymore..My clubs website seams to have died so until it's back up or I re-upload I ain't got no stories to tell hahahaha

What I did was pretty simple stuff with rookie welding too. Luckly I have a powerful stick welder that can burn thru anything. I made a /\ frame out of 2"x2" square tubing .120 wall I think and bought a peice of 1/2" plate laser cut in a circle for the wheel to bolt to. welded that to the top of the A frame. the A frame is welded to that trailer spindal and that is welded to the 3"x8" main bumper. Done. Some guys make the A frame smaller and mount it to one side or the other. mounted lower for more review mirror visablity OR mounted higher for better apporch angle clearance when your grill is pointing skyward on your favorite trail. Yup I mounted mine high for better trail clearance. Now my rearview mirror is mostly tire, I can see around it a bit..no worries the goal it to go forward not back right! haahaha

Re: Custom bumpers

Thank's Burt. I get the idea, just wish you had some pic's. I can't even get the first couple you posted earlier on this thread to work now. That design looks like the way to go. Thanks, Bryan.

Re: Custom bumpers

I gave up on my club's site comming back to life so I am trying to find pics on my home pc..I haven't found the build pic when I was welding this up but here is a finnished product shot. That is a 35" SSR mounted to that gate. You can see the spindal on the right and thoes D-ring/shakle mounts are 6" long just the base is buried into the bumper welded everywere posiable.

Ok, anybody know of a company selling this type of rear bumper for our first gen blazers? Other than Kennasaw Mountain? Really need to line one up soon. I will never deal with KMTA again!

Re: Custom bumpers

Anyone seen a custom rear bumper for a 2nd Gen modified to fit a 1st. gen? Been looking but no luck, other than having one welded up. Guess that's the way I'll have to go.

No fab guys in your area?

I'd compile all the ideas you like best, all the stuff that will work best for 'you' and take the new plans to someone and have it built.

Win/win for you IMO, local sale, no shipping or having to deal with e-mail rants and you'll get the perfect product built just for your truck.

Re: Custom bumpers

Good advice VT. Found a guy at work that might be able to get me a good deal on the raw steel to fab up a custom rear bumper setup! Just gotta come up with the design I want, and the proper dimensions, etc! Also a couple real good welders at work, I just need to find a space to get started! Thank's!

Burt 4x4, can you give me any more closeup pic's of how your tire carrier mounts up on the end opposite the spindle? Any more pic's would be great. Gonna design my own setup, but need some more help. Thank's!

Dream up exactly what you want.Don`t you have any welding shops or truck body places in the Yellow Pages? Some of the nicest bumpers were built on b&m (that`s beer & materials) for alot less than a catalog bumper.
