67/68 Steering Wheel Trivia

What is the steering wheel in the first pic below from originally? I don't know so it isn't really a trivia game...

I had trouble trying to get my new horn button to work because it seemed too tight against the steering wheel. I bought the steering wheel (that I thought was an original) at a swap meet two years ago and put the factory one from my truck on the shelf. I didn't notice the difference and now I want to know what this steering wheel is out of or what kind of horn button to use with it.

Here is a pic of the wheel I bought and ran for the past year that doesn't have a recessed flange for the outside bend of the horn button to fit into when depressed. The pic below it is my original wheel getting prepped for new epoxy. All other original steering wheels I've seen have that step at the end BUT the one I bought (pic 1) at a swap meet doesn't.




What is this mystery wheel originally out of? Horn delete? It is the exact same size and shape as original except for that missing step at the end.

Hmmm...If it was a bit larger I was going to suggest maybe it was from a newer medium duty that had some other design horn button. But,it's the same size and I have only seen the same type horn button on medium duties. I thought maybe an air horn equipped heavy medium would have a blank. It's not like GM to make a different part for the same purpose,so this is truly a mystery. Can't wait to see what comes out of this. Good thread!

Could be that because turning the outer area for the horn button is an extra step and therefore extra cost they made some for vehicles that didn't require a horn (just a thought).

If it's exactly like your original and in good condition a good machine shop could duplicate that outer step for you.

Theres probably a part # on the bottom. That could help you out, but you will have to pull the wheel.

Looks to be a '67 Nova (Chevelle & Elky) three spoke wheel.

Well, I don't quite know what to say. Where did you look? The second link I posted had the primary information that lead me to the '67 nova application. A quick cross check showed the ..64 P/N as a '67 nova. Since I don't currently have a pass. car parts book covering these cars its up to you to do the leg work. A deep search of my truck parts sources 10-60 showed similar 63-68 and tilt '70 applications but were hundreds of numbers or more off from your target. So this seems to be a valid lead. GM P/N typicaly use the last digit for similar handed parts or running changes. Since there wouldn't be a LH vs RH steering wheel it is probably a color difference. Classic is going to list a part number for their products using the last or most common known P/N. In any event you are very close. Try to dig up access to parts catalog ending in '67 to check and not a parts book that goes back to '67. The later a book is printed (by GM) the more superscessions and deletions there are.
