Replacing Parking Break Assy - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a new parking break assy and had its pedal pad move to the right so it can clear my new kicker speakers. I have a 72 C10 LWB 350/TH350 and hoping to get some advise on how to remove the old one and get the new one installed. The currently one is fully installed (with everything around it installed) and working properly.

Things I think I know:
1. Remove the two assembly's firewall nuts
2. Remove the underside assembly's nut/bolt on the dash.
3. Likely loosen (or remove?) 3 driver side dash bolts - to loosen the right side of the dash?
4. Push / slightly knock the Break Assy to the right to get it out.

But before all the above I am pretty sure I need to deal with the Brake Assy cable. I know there is a cotter pin/clevis pin attaching the parking brake line to the assembly but I assume this is under wee bit of pressure (even when the brake is not engaged). Do I just go underneath the truck, driver side, behind the transmission and loosen the adjustment nut to gain some slack?

I have read and found a few posts on removing the assembly, which is where I got my 1~4 "things I think I know". Though I haven't found how to best/properly do the parking break cable.

Disconnect the front cable were it meets the rear two. You should be able to do this without touching the Adjuster. If you feel you need too.

Guess I am going to need to spy that underneath to see what you mean. That would be nice if I could do this without touching the adjuster.

Make sure the clevis pin is reinserted in the same direction. If it’s flipped 180 it’ll move slightly over time and get caught on the assembly when the pedal is depressed.

So, you mean the way it is inserted into assembly and insuring the cotter pin is on the side it is on now? Good tip. Before I started removing stuff, I was going to snap a few photos of things (always good to have a reference on this were before mucking with it)!

Correct. Keep the cotter pin on the same side it is now.

For the record I did look at the Service Manual but it really makes it seem easy. I mean even with the parking brake released, the cable must be on a bit of tension (meaning I'll not be able to get it back on). Then they say unbolt it and remove it, nothing about loosening the driver's side of the dash.

Then the only way I can see how to loosen the cable, is at the adjuster. Unless removing a brace would also give the cable a bit of some slack??

Andy, I think I saw that a bit ago, I assume you mean wiring up a a switch to engage the dash's "brake" light? That is a clever idea and seems rather easy.

Might you have any insight when you took yours out of the dash? I would appreciate any/all tips/steps/problem areas?

Well, much to do about nothing, it seems... It was easy to pull out, zero problems. I barely touched it to the right (to the passenger side) and it started to move out.

When I got ready to put in the clevis pin, I did have to loosen the adjustment. What I actually did was first removed the driver's line from the C-Clappy thing that goes to the driver's rear wheel. I figured it's got to be easier to manhandle down there, than up around the clevis pin!

So, uninstalled, reinstalled, and the parking brake still works. Yay me!

Oh and my parking brake pedal now clears the kicker speaker - which was the whole point of this!

Shout out to Leon (LockDoc) for selling me this parking brake assy for a great price and for my brother (who cannot see this, because he cannot figure out the internet) for moving the pedal and painting it black!

Not bad for Leon shipping it to my bro on the 14th, my bother doing the work on the on 18th and me installing it today on the 23th! Then all you guys listening to me whinging here this morning - it was a fine team effort LOL

It sucks not being able to hear! LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB! After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
