5.7 vortec swap 5.3

A buddy has truck with 5.3.He was asking me if 5.7 vortec would be easy swap. Since I'm not that up on late model stuff I figured I would ask here. What will have to be changed and will computer stuff work?

None of the wiring harness or the computer will be the same. It would be a big swap.

Why does he want to do that?

Got to remember that the LS motors in the trucks had the vortec labeling and lots of folks call the vortec engines. Then you have the late 90's trucks with the vortec heads. He may be thinking all LS. Gonna need more info on what he is thinking.

Re: 5.7 vortec swap 5.3

There is a 5.7 Vortec that is a LS based engine that was installed in the F bodies and Corvette's starting in '98 (?). Then there is the '96-'02 L31 5.7 Vortec Gen I small block installed in trucks and full size vans. Going backwards would not be easy, nor advisable.

Re: 5.7 vortec swap 5.3

I do not remember the 5.7s in the F-bodies, GTOs, CTS-V and C5s being marketed as Vortec but interchange is about as friendly as a 307 and 327.

The exception is with the computer if you have a 5.3 and going to a LS1/LS6 5.7 the crank reluctor wheel needs to be the same. 5.7s were all 24 tooth. 5.3s were originally 24 but later 5.3s were 58 tooth. GM also varied cam sensor with the evolution of ECU. Lingenfelter does offer a converter box to run the new Gen4 sensor combination with a Gen3 ECU but I do not know of anyone who can run Gen3 sensor signals with a Gen4 ECU. 5.3s have also been bored to 5.7s. 5.3, 5.7, 6.0, and 6.2 share the same stroke.

A L31 can be converted to run off a 0411 ECU which was one of the ECUs used on Gen3 4.8/5.3/5.7/6.0 motors. If you google L31 0411 ECU swap, I am sure plenty of results will show. However, if you have a completed 5.3 swap it would be much easier and cheaper to get another LS based motor. L31s were the last evolution of the traditional SBC used in a production vehicle and as such use traditional SBC exhaust manifolds, and I believe motor mounts rather than LS units.

Is this a swap a swap or factory installed 5.3?
