This is correct. Although traditionally the new models come out in the fall, there are specific cases where as a manufacturer we do whatever we want.

For example, when we introduced the 2002 Cadillac Escalade (GMT820C) we started the model year on January 2, 2001 and ran the 2002 models through the fall of 2002 calendar year.

The only Federal requirement is that you cannot have two "January 1sts" included in the same model year (hence the January 2nd start date).

We do that now, but not so much back in the 1990's and earlier.
