Identify Bellhousing

Can anyone identify this bellhousing?
I do not remember what this came off of, and no I have no idea what it will bolt to.
It does not match my SAE chart, and I have not found anything that comes close
Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Identify Bellhousing

That "8" is actually a "3". A quick search states it's for a '66-'79 Big Block Chevy.

Type GM 3947709 into google and you will find many different links on it. By reading them all, you should probably gather together enough info to figure out exactly what you have there in detail.

One of the better links:

Re: Identify Bellhousing

unless you have it and didnt take pics there is a metal plate to adapt it from the 90* gm bell housing pattern to the bigger pattern it is .

i have 1 in my c-60 and a complete spare setup with flywheel .

Thanks much for the information Bill. Good read.

Sweet, do you know what standard your adapter is?
I did know this was not a Chevy pattern and an adapter was required, but I cannot find which standard this pattern is.
I have a 5-speed out of a 72 C70 with an SAE 2 bellhousing, but this is not even close to an SAE 2.
I have a 5.9 Cummins with an SAE 3 adapter and dimensionally this is close but still not correct for a SAE 3.
This housing does not match the dimensions of any of the SAE's that I am familiar with.
Are there others that I am not aware of?
Did Chevy/GMC use a specific SAE adapter or something proprietary?

Thanks
KC

Re: Identify Bellhousing

I remember that one, it's for a truck Big Block, uses the iron nose starter with 3 horizontal bolts, has pads for rear engine mounts. Usually used with a big Clark, Fuller or New Process 5 speed, single disc clutch. Lower transmission bolt holes not threaded, bolts go in from the clutch side. It is not any kind of SAE bolt pattern because it bolts to an adapter to mate to the standard Chevy bell housing bolt pattern as sweetk30 pointed out. There are SAE bell housings that bolt to a Big Block Chevy, but this isn't one of them. Look for a 427 with an Allison or a twin-disc clutch, 10 or 13 speed. I think most of those are SAE. One number that I found that lists as SAE #2 for Chevy V-8 is 14001929, that might be what you are looking for.

Thanks Bob, you are spot on. But this pattern has to be identified as something?
I have an Allison from behind a 427 and it is a SAE 3.
I have a Spicer from behind a 427 and it is a SAE 2.
My 76 C60 has a 366 with a NP and its housing is a SAE 2.

If I was to call a salvage yard to try to buy an adapter, I would not know what to ask for.

I guess it is just more of a mystery for me as I cannot find a use for this until I find what it will bolt too.

Very Cool..!
Thank you Sweet.
I have none of these pieces for adapting.
I will keep an eye out for some that come up for sale.

Re: Identify Bellhousing

Do a search and find a picture of 14001929, I don't think it uses that adapter. If I am not mistaken, it's Chevy bolt pattern on the engine side, SAE #2 on the clutch/transmission side.

You are right, 3 bolt starter.

You are correct. The engine side is Chevrolet.
The trans side appears to be SAE2. Difficult to say without measuring.

Here is a SAE 2 on a Spicer I have.

The AT545 (automatic) is a SAE 3
