Wtb new bed wood, polished strips and PSS bolts for 68 swb fleetside bed. Can p/u at Charlotte, NC. Auto fair or between SW Va. And Myrtle Beach, SC. Labor day week. Just trying to save on the ridiculous $160 shipping charge from k-mar.

Bring the dimensions to a local wood shop or cut it yourself.

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

No way. I am a carpenter by trade (earlier in life) and still wouldn't do that. Counter sunk, offset holes aren't the issue. Time and money is the issue. I've got the money and not the time. Some things are worth paying for. For me, this is one of them. Besides, i'm pretty sick and tired of this build and just want to be done with it. "Fun" went away a long time ago. Heck, i don't even like trucks that much. My whole family were/are carpenters so trucks are for work, not pleasure. I'll just sell this one like i do most of my "rebuilds." I'm just old and tired, that's all. SORRY FOR THE RANT. Very good info in that link. Thanks.

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

No problem. I just threw it out there as an option. I want to do my own but go with a different option for wood, something exotic with great looks.

If you remove your original wood and give it along with the dimensions to a family member you can pay them. This way you may have the bed completed quickly and no shipping charges.

Good thought as an option, but i'm converting from steel to wood,. That's why i also need strips and bolts. Might as well buy the whole kit

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

Did bed wood out of hickory for a 63 LWB on Monday. Took two hours, including swapping the blades on the table saw. I understand trying to save on shipping... but how much is your time worth?

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

Wow. That's pretty fast ! That was routing edges and drilling holes ? I guess there are only 6-8 holes to mount bed, but still pretty fast. I am a truck driver now so time is VERY valuable. Money is great but time.... forget it. Plus i've got a wife that thinks this carpenter/home improvement guy should be working on "her" house all the time. I've got a killer garage and 6 yrs. Till retirement. (Time). The truck was gonna wait and be a retirement gig but master cyl. Went out on the 68 about the time i finished a 52 pick up so.......as it usually goes, one thing led to another. We have a huge auto fair close by, in Charlotte, NC in a couple weeks, so i just figured i could save some change( $160) by buying the wood kit there.

If you are changing from Steel to wood there may be cross members that require changing. I am not too sure of this, others may chime in.

Look into the auto fair and see what suppliers will be there. Call them up ahead of time to ask if they will have a wood bed kit available In Charlotte.

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

Yeah, all the cross members are different and i already have the correct ones. Even the lip on front panel is at a different height, therefore must be changed. This is/was my way of reaching out to any vendors on this site that might be attending Charlotte auto fair. But that's a good idea to maybe get a list of vendors and contact them.

Here is a member that makes beautiful looking bed wood kits who is not too far away from you. You could get the bed strips from Summit.

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

I bought my wood here, classic parts, shipping was as stated $56, it took about 2 weeks, I think they drop ship it. Very happy with the wood, cut right, boards matched good, etc.

Re: Wtb bed wood kit

I think I got my bolts from them too but I know I got the strips from summit, it was cheaper due to free shipping, I found the strips on the AMD website then found the best price at summit if I remember right.

That would be my suggestion, too. I've seen his work and know he is a do it right kind of guy. Also is a cabinet maker by trade. I am also a wood worker and have done many bed floors myself. So I know what I'm looking at.

That was ripping to width and cutting the two edge details. No holes, I do that after the wood goes in to get them in the right spot. Installed the wood yesterday, bed gets mounted on Monday.
