Not sure what to do?
I am thinking about giving my 72 LWB chevy to my step son, and buying me a 72 short wheel base step side. I just started looking for one last week, I want one with the same options that mine have. I found one, but it don't have a factory A/C in it, it is after market A/C. On the other hand I already know how dependable mine is, and hate to buy one that is not as good as mine. Just not sure what I want to do.

What about a father son buildup project and give that truck to your stepson? Or maybe you'll decide differently when all is said and done. I built my '69 with my 'ol man and it was one of the best bonding experiences I've ever had. I learned TONS along the way as well. That darn truck will be in my family forever!

Buildup projects are great! That is a good way to go and there is nothing wrong with having more than one truck. You could still get a short box for yourself after you finish the buildup project.
We like short and long box trucks but for long trips the smoothness of long boxes makes the ride much easier. Short boxes are fun, so I think that it is nice to have both. Jim

I am going to have to agree with the two people ahead of me - a buildup would be great. I loved everytime my Dad and I worked on my 69 Chevy Nova. I don't know how long you have been his step-father but I might also be a way to spend time together. Just my two cents.

In my experience when someone is given a great gift without understanding how much hard work or effort went into it, it is not appreciated as it should be and may even be abused. This truck means alot to you and it might actually put a wedge between you and your step son if he doesn't treat the vehicle the same as you would. Do another project together.

sam's 72, imho, i believe (if you havent found out already) that you should find out if your son in law has a strong interest in these trucks before he gets possession of one. i say this becuase when my dad gave me my truck, i wasnt really fond of it, he knew i was interested in classics but i never really saw the potential of these trucks until not too long ago. If your truck is already in great shape, i wouldnt just give it too him because that means a great deal to you and he might not appreiciate it, I.E. he might not treat it with the respect you have towards it. Finnally, i also follow everyone elses reply to do a father/son build up so he will learn respect, responsibility and apprieciation towards the truck.

I would have given anything to do a build up with my dad! Just make sure this is a team project and not you doing all the work and your son getting all the benefit. I think your son will enjoy and respect the truck if he understands how much work is involved. I have lots of friends who’s dads built their trucks/cars for them and most of them wrecked or ruined them in short order!! Good luck I am very envious of your son.

Funny thing, when you start being your children's buddy you start to loose the repect of being the parent. I made the mistake with my son and can say from experience that what they don't work for (and work hard for) they don't respect. Maybe your son is the one-in-a-million that is different and maybe he already works hard, I hope so, but giving almost never leads to anything positive for the parent. "Earning" (REALLY EARNING)usually helps the child learn lessons that help them throughout life. You posted the question...

I agree with you guys, I think I will make him earn this truck, the truck is solid, and is in very good shape, it was restored about 5 years ago, I know in my gut that I should either keep it my self or sell it, he is not driving yet, and I hate to see this truck crashed, over a stupid mistake, I know I could crash it tomorrow, but I also know know how hard young guys are on thier first car or truck. I guess I am just going to have to work this out in my head!
