Who has used CLR on OG patina? Lets see the before and after pictures!

Anyone used CLR to clean up an old weathered paint job? If so, what did you learn while doing it and how did it turn out?

Pictures are always cool.

The best thing to do on this is to type CLR into the Google search box at the top of this page, click on the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com" and click on the google button. There are quite a few threads on it and that way you can check them all out.

What does the CLR actually do to the rust/metal? does it just prohibit rust? I'm sure you would need to wax over the final rinse.

I think they are talking about the CLR Cleaner - calcium lime rust

Yes, but what does it do the metal/rust? Is it like a RustMort product?

Why a 50-50 mix, not straight? Looks good though. What are your plans for it now?

I think 95% of what guys call "patina" is just decades of neglect, rust & rot. REAL patina is a decades-old car/truck that has been washed, waxed and polished til maybe it's gone through to the primer and maybe even bare metal in places but you can tell the car's been cared for.

Amen to this! When I was a kid, they called that rust and it made a car worth less money. Now, they call it Patina and it apparently makes a car worth more money. I don't understand it, but to me your definition is spot on. This craze over rust and just calling it patina is absurd to me.

Re: Who has used CLR on OG patina? Lets see the before and after pictures!

The CLR is a good product to use to get rid of rust stains, typically it will reveal the original paint and or primer hiding under the surface rust stains. It will not stop rust, it does not etch rust it just gets rid of rust staining- I suspect iron out ( same stuff we use to get white ball pants white again ) would do the same thing. The CLR seems to be a base in nature and you will need to scrub to improve the results. There is also a product called iron x for pain that will remove rust stains but it is expensive in comparison. I like using CLR on old rough paint to see what can be saved, but it is not a magic bullet, as others have stated it helps to cut through years of neglect and give you an idea of what was once was.

Here are a few I’ve done. 0000 steel wool and CLR. Rinse with water then a good coat of wax.

What about a clay bar. I have heard those work but maybe not for rust?

A clay bar is good for over spray removal and to remove some of the oxidation on single stage paint but not rust.

I used CLR and a green Scotchbrite pad to remove the rust from my West Coast Jr mirrors. Before and after below.

Re: Who has used CLR on OG patina? Lets see the before and after pictures!

I'm not sure what it does chemically (if anything) but I like the results. I have used it on surface rust and oxidized paint with 50% water, worked every inch carefully by hand with 0000 steel wool. If you get too aggressive even the 0000 can leave behind marks, so you have to go slow and keep it wet. Followup with wax (or clear coat) really makes it shine, although if the surface is not really smooth the wax leaves behind residue. So if there's any pitting you may want to avoid wax. It does take off a thin amount of paint, so be aware of that. Here are some examples...

That photo was actually before clear coat, it was just wet. That’s what made me want to do the clear coat. I just washed with soap and water and taped it off, then had a friend do the painting.

Re: Who has used CLR on OG patina? Lets see the before and after pictures!

I used it on a '69 that had mostly original paint.

Rust stains gone.

It made a huge difference inside the bed, then I coated it with Penetrol to bring out more color, darken the rust, and give it a slight sheen.

How about the trim? Does it mess up the trim when the CLR gets on it?
