New guy lookin for a panel

I have been lurking here for a while and decided to register. I am looking for a panel truck and think the 67-72 series may be what I want. The older ones look cooler but usaully have a gear ratio that would make the engine scream at 70mph.
I do not want a show truck or anything that has been lowered. I prefer an auto trans and a V8, but a 4 spd and or 6 cyl would work.I am burnt out on he 3 on the tree thing. I want a daily driver, something dependable,but could get dirty, and not worry about if I put a little scratch in it. I would use it for camping and hauling my leaves away in the fall.
I have a 65 econoline that I could work out a trade of some sort with. I like the idea of a hood as vans are cramped to work on the engine. I am in no hurry as the econo works fine, and I have a 79 Chevy shortbox 4x4 as well. I think If I wait I will find exactly what I want at a fair price.
I have a car payment untill spring and was thinking of maybe selling the 79, and the econoline, aftr my car is paid off. I might buy a newer truck( ZR2?) and just have one oldie to play with. Sometimes I feel I am overwhelmed.
What do you think a plain jain useable panel would run? I was thinking about $3k + or -, depending on what it needs.

Yep, Ive been finding quite a few diff panels online. But the real old oned always have 55 mph max gears in em. I dont want to do an axle swap and have diff botl patterns front/rear. If I am patient I will find what I want. Every time I buy the 1st one of anything a better one at a better price comes along within a couple months. There is a 58 panel locally has lots of spare parts, but needs more work than I want to get involved with. I passed on a minty 62 1 ton panel as it would top out at 55, and no one makes an upgrade for a 62 1 ton. Patience patienc patience!

i'm new here too. don't know if this will interest you or not, but....
i have a 1947 chevy panel that has a camaro front subframe, posi disc brake 3.42:1 10 bolt rear, caddy tilt /tele column, master cyl/brake pedal assy mounted, mounts made for chevy motor and either 350 or 700 tranny, and pretty much all the stock parts to build it. very solid rust free body and the chassis is set up right. it sits low, but not really low and needs plumbing, electrical, interior and paint. how mechanicaly inclined are you? all the hard stuff is done, just needs some one who has the time to devote.... i bought a house and that is my 'project' for a while...

Just something to think about. If you are looking to swap engine and trans and not mess with changing the rear end. 47-mid 50's trucks came with a torque tube rear that has the drive shaft enclosed so it will not bolt up to the trans unless it is another one of that type of design which will give you ridiculous RPM at high speeds. IF you go with that year truck you have to 1. keep it original, 2. Swap, engine, trans, AND rear end, or 3. Buy one already done like tommo has. Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide.

That is exactly why I think the 67-72 series may be what I want. Here is what I would love to find.... 67 panel,283 2bbl,auto trans, solid body, dependable daily driver. I would take a suburban set up like this as well. There is one like this on Ebay but is way out in Tulsa Ok . If I found a Burb, I could have my girlfriend make some curtains, as I really just want one for camping. That is why I don't really want one that has been lowered. I dont want to bottom out on the 2 trax. Seems like the Burbs are much more common.
I like them old 283's, and have grown quite fond of the 2bbl rochester carb as well. Everyone thought I was nuts, when I yanked the edelbrock carb off my 79 4x4, and replaced it with a stock 2bbl carb and manifold. It will still bake the tires 1/2 down the block, and does not sputter when climbing steep hills like the edelbrock did.

Welcome to the board.Just something I came across.
There is a restored 68 panel truck in Hemmings ready to go with fresh paint for $7000.Turn Key.I believe that you would have a hard time building anything that cheap. Good luck on your search

Wow nice old Burb, but almost too nice. I was hoping to find something in the $2-$4k range. I am sure I can if I wait. If I had my car paid for, and sold my 79, and econoline I could spend more. Hunting season is just starting,and winter is around the corner....need my 4x4. I traded the edelbrock to my neighbor, in ekchange for some help working on my 79.
