Re: Buck's '70 swb w/5.3 build

Received my headers today, they look great and I appreciate the great deal from Prathbun. Bolted them up to see how they fit and I am pleased. Need to get a Lokar dipstick on order to go with them. Also called Stan at ECE and ordered my drop kit so I can get this thing rolling. If all goes well with shipping next weekend should be a blast!

Re: Buck's '70 swb w/5.3 build

So, I ordered new ball joints, upper and lower, and new lower cross shafts on eBay over the weekend. Really good deal, all Moog parts at half the cost of the local parts houses. Got a tracking number yesterday saying they will be here by the weekend and I am stoked! Well, today I get an email saying that I received a refund due the unavailability of one of the cross shafts from the manufacturer. The listing said more than 10 available... WTH? Luckily, a supplier in St Louis has one and it only costs $4 and a little change more than the other place. I just hope I can get it by Friday. I am looking forward to a full Saturday in the garage!

Re: Buck's '70 swb w/5.3 build

Took a few steps back this weekend to redo something that I didn't do correctly. I welded the A/C delete panel over the top of the existing sheet metal, and that is not correct. After I did it the first time I didn't like it, so I contacted Nate at PorterBuilt and he showed me the correct way. Thanks Nate! I had a hell of a time with grinding the welds down, so I just primed and hopefully I go back to it another time. Or maybe I'll let the body guy do it.

Re: Buck's '70 swb w/5.3 build

Took a long time, but I finally got my cross shafts and ball joint in the lower control arms, that was a pain! Also put the upper ball joints in and put everything on the cross member in preparation for the spindles, springs, and shocks that should be here Wednesday.

More goodies 4/6 drop spindles/springs with shocks from ECE and disc brake dust shields from GMC Paul. Progress pictures soon, as I have to study for a test.

Re: Buck's '70 swb w/5.3 build

Worked all day trying to get my engine mounts to work as advertised... still no good. Stan at ECE says I has c20 engine stands instead of c10, I guess I'll have him send me the right stuff. Also had the tires removed from my rallys. Blasting and painting to follow soon.

Good question. I have been pondering it all day. I think I am going to go with silver. The problem I have is where do I buy the paint? Eastwood supposedly has the most correct Argent Silver, but how much do I buy and not come up short or have too much left over? Can't just run down and pick up another can. Do the local auto parts stores have a silver with the right tint? Did some searches on here but haven't found anything yet.

Re: Buck's '70 swb w/5.3 build

Sorry to hear your mounts are not working out. Square body mounts work for us too. I have them on my stepside and they fit well.

I shifted them forward on mine to allow my tall valve covers on the big block to come off the retaining studs and clear the roller rockers without hitting the firewall, otherwise they would have bolted in place perfectly.

The problem I am having with the engine stands is that engine is too high compared to the trans mount. This causes the trans to not sit flat on the mount. Check it out...

How about cutting the tranny mounting tab off and flipping it over and rewelding it? That would raise the rear mounting point about an inch.

I don't think it will sit flat then. The real point to this that the parts are supposed to work together and they are not. Why?
