Dumb stuff that you've done
Let me preface this by saying that I've done a LOT of dumb things and I have the divorce papers to prove it.
But I'm talking about the small stuff. Case in point. I stopped for cigarettes yesterday. The girl in there knows me. (I smoke too much. I know. I'm aware. ) She asked me how many packs I wanted. And I went to hold up two fingers. But only one came up. My middle finger. OOPS! I just flipped her off. She laughed and said I was crazy. I was embarrassed. But she was cracking up. Unfortunately my wife was with me and gave me that "You idiot" look. At least everyone left laughing. Except my wife. She wasn't laughing. But she married me. What did she expect?

"yeah, sorry about that. I've had it since birth and some times it just goes off".
At my age I've done way too much dumb stuff to remember, nor want to.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
I was hoping for a new thread I could participate in. Is it ok to give examples of dumb things "someone I know" has done?
Well, there was the one time I was fixing my oatmeal and coffee up. I do it pretty much every day, but one day the fog was thick and I dumped flax seed in my coffee

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
i've done a lot of dumb stuff but the thing that tops it off was in my much younger days. One summer day I took a girl to a theme park. It was hot outside and the drinks came and went easily. We were both a bit wild when sober but a little alcohol would change the game.
As we meandered through the park, we passed the roller coaster, went into the fun house and had some tawdry fun of our own. We left the fun house and got a couple more drinks. Wandering further we happened upon a photo booth and we each looked at one another, knowing what the other was thinking: some naughty photos for own keepsake which we would certainly laugh about later. After all, it had a curtain. We both went in. It was a small booth, probably intended for one occupant. Immediately we became involved in some risque behavior, pausing occasionally to feed the photo machine dollar bills and snap some shots. We could hear the pedestrians outside as we got more frisky in the booth. But we noticed repetitive phrases from the people like, Hey man, come look at this" or "Wow, that's hot". We wondered what everyone was talking about. We knew they couldn't see us and the interest outside kept growing. We decided we had enough photos and wanted to see what had captured everyone's interest outside. So regaining our composure we looked inside the booth for our stack of photos as we prepared to exit. There were none. There wasn't even a slot for them to come out. We had been ripped off! But since we had fun anyway, we opened the curtain and stepped out determined to make the best of it. There before us was about 200 onlookers, all were staring at the booth. It was then that we noticed the viewing screen on the outside of the booth and a large slot directly below it for the photos. The photos were gone. Well that performance got mixed reviews and we made haste to exit the park. There is such a thing as too much fun |

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
Why is there a curtain at all? Certainly not for privacy. Someone didn't think that through too well and you two were innocent victims . I'm glad there were no video screens in my day.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
Good question. We never checked for an outside monitor, why would we. I never saw a photo booth with one before. We never thought to check. Oh well, dumb stuff, huh.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
I worked with a woman. She was.. Shall we say...."Large" I thought that she was expecting but was afraid to say anything. Because it was tough to tell.
Finally one of the girls in the office congratulated her and I was off the hook. I wanted to say congratulations previously. But I just thought that if she wasn't pregnant that would be one hell of an insult.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
Can you imagine a guy at a strip club asking a dancer that question? yes, I do know of such a case. And, no, not me. Even I know better than that! .
I wanted to have something to post about, like the rest, so I went out and did something dumb. I wanted to move my utility trailer, so I hooked up and pulled it forward about 20' and backed it into a side space. I noticed a wheel chock about 20' from where the trailer had been sitting. What's funny is my driveway is stone and it was just sitting there like I had set it there, and no disturbed stones for the 5' or so I could see behind it. I don't know how that happened, but I figured I got lucky. Then I walked around the front of my Suburban and that's when I saw the trough I had plowed out in my driveway. What I want to know is who is sneaking around putting wheel chocks in front of my trailer tires anyway??

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
When we were in high school my buddies and I were kinda famous as “those idiots on the lawnmower”. We decided one day it would be cool to get some on board video but this was long before the go pro and we weren’t smart enough to mount the video camera to the mower. We hitched up the garden trailer and headed down the street. At about 25mph it got a wobble and dumped my buddy who was holding the camera onto the pavement. I managed to stay on and get it stopped. As my buddy walked back with various scrapes and bruises he pointed out the 10mph rating on the tires and said “We were doing atleast 20 when it flipped and that f@&$ing hurt!”

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
Man, this is an instance there are so many examples I can't think of one
Surely one of the dumbest things was when I was 10-11 yrs, which involved a bow & arrow, marshmellow, lighter fluid & match. Beautiful secluded Marlette Lake area. I set off 1-2 before I realized this could go very badly For a more current dumb, I recently spoke to a crazy lady in a cemetery

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
I could list dozens of things that I should have done differently, and either got lucky and survived or else the consequences were just painful and I moved on.
But I would have to say that my dumbest thing was for decades thinking that most other people were more or less like me, either in intelligence or good intentions.

We were putting new steps in the pool....there wasn't quite enough weight to hold them down...I filled several jugs with water and set them on the steps....
then watched as they slowly floated off.....a "duh" moment for sure....

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
.
Disregard the "disconnect the battery" rule before working on vehicles... Once I was under my T/A which was was up on stands. Had both hands/arms up inside trying to get a socket on #8 plug when my ratchet slipped and arced against the wrong posts on the starter which turned the motor over. Pure luck had the tranny in neutral and so I'm still alive to tell the tale. -klb

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
For the first time in my life (39) I locked a set of keys in a car and didn't have a spare.
I lost my set of keys to every vehicle I own at the dump last year. Of course I bought new keys to everything but never had them cut. I was changing the oil in the wife's 2011 Mustang on Saturday, I set the keys on the floor like I always do so I can't ever accidentally start it, and the SOAB locked. I never touched anything. I set the keys on the floor and closed the door (this was after driving the car up on ramps, shutting it off, setting keys on floor, closed the door.) The lock guy (amazing how fast they get in) said it's not supposed to happen in modern cars, but sometimes stuff like a low battery can cause it to do that. We've owned that car since it was brand new in late 2010, it's never done that to me before. I was super embarrassed and my wallet was $40 lighter.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
When I was much younger I bought a cross bow to shoot carp in the spring. Got the reel mounted. Put some fish line on the reel and thought lets test thing out. Put arrow in it and just shot it into the air. When the arrow hit the end of the fish line and the monofilament has a lot of stretch in it the arrow came back at me almost as fast as when I shot it. Just past my head. Didn't do that again.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
When I was a teen, one of my friends' dad worked in a machine shop manufacturing components from magnesium. My friend would go in on weekends and do janitorial tasks for some spare cash. He would also bring home #80 paper shopping bags full of magnesium shavings. We used to set that stuff alight in strange places. One time, after the trash had been collected, we dragged the trash barrel (which in those days was a 55 gallon drum with little hard rubber wheels) into his back yard. We took a 1 pound coffee can and stuffed in a bunch of shavings and filled it 1/3 with water. I pulled a shaving up as a wick, set the can inside the trash barrel and lit it. Of course, once the fire hit the water, the magnesium exploded, sending flaming shavings into...the massive tree in their back yard. Now, the tree is on fire, but we couldn't put it out with water, because that would just accelerate the fire. We had to wait for the magnesium to stop burning first, then put it out. Good times! Lucky to be alive, I am! There was flaming magnesium all over the back yard, but we both somehow managed to escape unharmed.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
Not sure how old I was, but quite young when I decided to dig a hole in the back yard, then cover it with small twigs & leaves so you wouldn't notice it. I wanted to see if I could trap a small animal when it fell in.
All I managed to trap was my dad, and he was none too happy about it. Soon after, I was none too happy either.

Re: Dumb stuff that you've done
Well, you're lucky anyway. I always wanted to make one of those traps. At least you can say you did... but it cost ya!
I had to get a new phone and a new camera all in the past year. I really liked both of them and both worked very well, no issues. First it was the camera. I was replacing cedar shakes with sheet steel on my house. There is no plywood on the rafters, just purlins. I had it all ready for the steel and took progress pictures early that morning. I remember thinking I better put the camera down the ladder somewhere so I didn't close it in under the roof. I even remember double checking before starting. I had to hustle to get it done because rain was coming that afternoon. Got it done just as the first drops fell... shew! I looked for the camera and never saw it again. I'm thinking I've got a time capsule thing going on Then it was the phone. I ran into town real quick for something. I went for my phone while in the store. "Huh, must have left it in the truck". Driving home I go to grab it. "Huh, must have left it home". Looked all around my place and never found it. I'm not forgettable at all. I distinctly remembered laying my phone on the back bumper. I have bad timing issues. If I could only remember things before I lose them and not after
