WIW: small block 400

I have a chance to buy a running small block 400 from a 78 suburban. Looks pretty original with 4 bbl carb and complete. Has good oil pressure also. Any ideas on the going rate for these? Has possibly 71K miles or 171. Engine is blue. Thanks, Eric

Re: WIW: small block 400

No idea on 2 or 4 bolt. I haven't looked up numbers yet. I would just like to get an idea on a stock, running engine that smokes a little on startup. I am thinking $300-$500 There used to be good demand for these but not sure if that is still true.

Re: WIW: small block 400

The wives tale is if it has three freeze plugs it is a 4 bolt if it has two with a boss for the third it is a 2 bolt. With so many crate engines now days unless you are building a number matching project the stock engines do not bring what they once did. I have two complete running 350 for 100 and can't give them away.I think even 300 would be on the high end but that is just my opinion.

Re: WIW: small block 400

I wish I could have found a 350 that cheap. Around here, $300 IS cheap for a complete engine. You're lucky to get a bare block for $100.

Re: WIW: small block 400

I have run into similar situations with 350s. Can't hardly give them away some days, unless you need one. I know i crushed 4 or 5 V-8s in the last year.
I made an offer, we will see what happens.

Re: WIW: small block 400

y'all are making me rethink that I got a good deal on paying $325 for a 350 without an intake or carb. Darn the rednecks in the South that make 350's such a hot commodity around here :'(

Yeah it's crazy down here. I see motors all day for sale for 300-1000 for used 350's. I've seen a rebuilt 302 I think it was for sale for almost 2 years on craigslist. People used to RE: him back and make fun of his ad. Either he sold that thing for 1000 or stop trying and used it or something because I don't see it anymore. These motors are not cheap down here, that's for sure!

Re: WIW: small block 400

In my area, a running stock 400 is $500 any day of the week. 70-72 were 4 bolt. 73-80 were 2 bolt.

Re: WIW: small block 400

Well, i passed on the engine so a buddy could get it who had a use for it. I had no use for it right now, but figured i might get it anyhow. It sold for $300.
Thanks for the replies...
