Re: Project 47 GMC

Has anyone done a gmc to chevy conversion? I was told that you just have to change the grille and hood. I already have a grille but wonder if I could just weld up the front of the hood to make it look like a chevy hood? What are the differences in the hoods. Both 1/2 tons.

Re: Project 47 GMC

Mike, just looking in,and there is a difference in the hoods. The Chevy hood has a different angle right on the front where the hood latches. If you notice right on the front of the GMC hood there is a longer edge, than on the Chevy hood. If you are a good fab guy, which from what I see you are, you might make it work. Also I think the radiator cover where your hood latches, may be different also. Good Luck.

Re: Project 47 GMC

Hey Mike, Heres a few picts of my truck that some friends and I put on an s-10 frame in record time. I used as much of the s-10 as I could. the wiring, steering column, brake pedel assembly ect. I ended up using the rear end out of a 75 chevy pick up, only because I already had the wheels to fit.check it out. I drove this truck to calgary, alberta, then to vancouver b.c and ferried over to victoria island, a 7000 km round trip, where I met my beautiful woman standing outside her work having a smoke when she flagged me over to check out my truck. brought the woman home with me too!! lol

Re: Project 47 GMC

heres some picts for you mike, if you look, you can see I cut out the back window like you were talking about and moved it as one piece . I lowered the back window to make the bottom of the glass flush with the bottom of the door glass.

I'd suggest finding Chevy parts to swap rather than modifying the GMC pieces. Chevy's seem to be much more common, and readily available. In fact, I'd be very interested in working a trade with you, but I don't know whether the shipping costs would be worth it.

Re: Project 47 GMC

Today I got the frontend taken apart and it seams like there might be a few pieces missing. I just put the fenders on the ground with hood just in the mock up position. This will not be the hood I use because I am converting to the chevy grille. I was going to try to fix the grille cover but wasn't sure the best way of doing it. There are 2 tears about 3" long, so should I just put it back together as best as it can and just tack weld it up. Need some imput.

Well, got a really nice hood of craigslist for $40. Starting talking with the guy and he has several trucks that are really nice. Told him he should look at this website and now he is a new member. His name is averagejimmie. Thanks for such a good deal!!

Re: Project 47 GMC

Starting assembling the frontend today and had a few questions. I am doing the gmc to chevy conversion and wonder if the bolts are the same. I tried to thread the grille to the side fender and they did not thread real easy. Also are these threaded nuts suppose to be removable or not.

Re: Project 47 GMC

GMC to Chev converstion...

Not sure if the grills bolt up... might want to make sure you retap all bolt holes first (5/16"). The grill (of course), the hood, the upper shroud and latch assembly, the latch assembly on the hood (if it didn't come with it), there are 2 panels on the underside of the grill as well to be swapped (the one from the bumper to the grill an and the one behind that) and the rad support. (The frame is slightly different under the rad support as well).

The GMC's also have the marker lights under the headlights, whereas the Chev's are in the grill itself.

Just from memory... may have missed something...

Cheers,
Ted.

Re: Project 47 GMC

Ted I did retap everything today and everything bolted together very well. I got the grill attached to the fenders. I am still missing a few parts thou. I still need a splash apron but will probably make my own because of the old school bumper I got with bezels. Missing turn signal lights but plan on using 57 chevy turn signals. Inner fender bracket but have one located. So I think the only thing left is the chevy hood latch and shroud cover.
