61 rebuild of the rebuilt

Finally decided to start a build thread even though I've already rebuilt most of the truck. My current plans are to make it as driver friendly as possible so this means power steering, front sway bar, larger fuel tank, redo my wiper system, and hopefully A/C and heat. And want to do a few other things like bags in the rear, c notch, new bed floor, change up some colors, and possible patina the paint.
A little back story of where we are: Pulled the truck from a field about 15 miles from where i live. Work truck, no ac heat or radio was built in Kansas and sold in south La. so its been a Louisiana truck its whole life. Stripped it to the frame and replaced every nut bolt bushing line and ball joint then repainted the frame. Stripped the body repaired rust in the floor rockers cab corners and doors smoothed out all the dents and painted it hot rod flatz daytona blue. Sripped the interior and replaces everything all new wiring gauges latches window regulators weather stripping gaskets then rattle can painted it a metal flake red and low gloss black. Oh yea, and its got a 350/700r4 combo with power disc brakes up front. That gets us close to where we are so time for pics!
How it sits now

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

Very clean looking truck !! and to the site !!

Any chance of photos of the inside?
Your description of the black and red has me curious....
My best friend once painted a 36 Willys coup plastic model with a stunning spring leaf green and gold metallic flake when we were kids, and it was amazing (obviously since I flash on it still and it has been over 30 years now)

thanks, hope to see more real soon !!!

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

Ok wow.... I totally love that underdash console !! Makes me want to go down and rip out the one I just welded in !! That is sweet design, and the color is great !!

Did you do all that work in there?
If so, do you have photos of the work in progress?

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

Nice looking truck! I am trying to do the same look with the flatz paint. My truck has speed blue but I really like your daytona blue. Could you tell me what drop and tire/wheel do you have on it front and rear?

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

My computer with all the pics of the original build has locked up and I havent been able to access any of them, plus it was my first total complete tear down and I really didnt take as many pics as I should have. I've done 95% of the work but I had lots of help along the way. A friend of mine who is a great custom audio guy (he has had numerous cars at SEMA) helped me build the console and I love it. The way it ties into the dash and the body lines flow into it makes it look almost factory.
As far as the paint, I do not like it. Its a cool color but its got an odd sheen to it and that prevents the flake to really pop. Thats why I'd like to patina it, I think that would make it look much better. As far as the drop I believe its a 4/6 spring drop and has 2 in blocks in the back and I cut 1 coil on the front. The rims are 15x7 and 15x10 I cant remember the front tire size but I think the back are 255/50.
Thanks for the compliments, I just found this site recently and it has really rekindled my fire for this truck, I had almost given up on it.
So here is the progress for today: I have the original wiper motor that did not work, so I bought a brand new one from classic it did not work and i had waited to long to use warantte so I bought one that "tested good" from ebay and it does not work so 3 wiper motors and none work!
[IMG][/IMG]
But on a positive note I did get the bed unbolted and the floor out so tomorrow got a friend coming to help me pull it. Then I can start on the C notches, bags, new fuel tank and new bed floor (which I am taking suggestions for but thinking about trying to see if I can fit a pair of antique doors in there.

Beds back on, new gas tank is in. Found some reclaimed ceder tounge and grove boards that I'm cleaning up and sealing for my bed floor (pics of that later). Still waiting on my compressor and valves to finish up the whole rear of the truck. Shooting to be done with it all by end of next weekend.

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

I am wanting to put blocks in the rear with stock springs. How much clearance did you have with the 2in block to the frame without the c notch? Was it enough from the axel to frame? Where did you buy the c notch? Like the progress you you are making. Can't wait for more pics.

You should be fine with blocks and stock springs. I had 3 inch drop springs and had plenty of room and never bottomed out, when I added the 2 inch blocks I would bottom out when I hit bumps in the road hard and fast. I never measured the actual clearance though. By the way good job on the Hot Rod Flatz paint, I painted my truck with it like you at diffrent times the shades are not matching up. I used same amount of coats, a paint booth and same pressure.

Still working on getting everything back together and all the little details finished up. Work has been interupting me to much! Hope to be done this upcoming weekend. I found some old reclaimed tounge and groove cedar at my dads farm and using it for the bed floor and it is looking great. Pics coming as soon as I wrap it all up.

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

Got everything wrapped up except the compressor, still waiting on the big brown truck to bring it to me. So here are the pics of the bed:

[IMG][/IMG]
My compressor will go in the box with the tank. I should also be able to store a few tools in there as well. Next on my list will be the front of the truck, going to tear it down add power steering a sway bar also just purchased a 375 horse power 355 so that will be going in over the next month and since I am pulling the motor I,m thinking of repainting my firewall and inner fenders. Projected time for all this is going to be about 6 weeks.

Chasing a few air leaks, then she'll be ready to go back together so I can start working on giving it a patinaed look.

It's all coming back together. Went with satin metallic mickle for the bumper, grill and park light bezels. Still working on air leaks and getting the body smoothed out.

Re: 61 rebuild of the rebuilt

So here is how my truck is looking as of today. Been slow process these last few weeks, buying a new house. Trying to get all the sanding done before we move. Also here is a pic of the shop that comes with the house (the main reason I wanted it), its 7000 sq feet and also has an office and parts room! So on my truck, I've just about solved all the air leaks but have now decided 1/2" lines at 200 psi are way to big so replacing all it with 3/8 line also I only have a 3 gallon tank and would like more air on reserve so just ordered a 5 gallon tank and plan on adding a second compressor. Body wise I have a few more hours on blocking the bed then got to paint the top of the cab the same color as my grill and bumper then I need to CLEAN my interior and reinstall my seats and center console. When I was building the truck before I was planning not to use any trim but I taped the custon cab trim on and am really starting to like it, what are yalls thoughts? And above all thanks for the compliments, its a huge motivation also watching everyones progress on their trucks keeps me wanting to finish mine!
