~gettin ready to throw in a 700r4 tell me what you think~

I have a 68 fs, 292 with the saganaw* still and have a buddy of mine that's willing to throw in a 700r4 for a good price, but before i take it to him today, i would like to know if i'm making a mistake by doing the swap. I'm really looking to get on the hwy every now and then, and not have to worry about shifting. I have 4:11's and could really use a 4th gear! Tell me what ya'll think. Thx

It would be a good swap at the right price, IMO, but be aware of the things you need to address like drive line length, necessity of a flex plate, tv cable, speedo cable, steering column, etc. Just be aware that it's more than just a swap out, but a lot of guys have done it and are very happy with it.

It's a great swap. The biggest obstacle is the cross member. If it has the one under the bell housing with the engine mounts you will have to remove it & install one at the rear of the trans.

Good swap if the trans is built right, be sure your buddy knows how to properly setup the TV cable or it will die pretty quickly.

TV = throttle valve
It sets the hydraulic line pressure inside the trans. Not enough psi and they slip, too much and they shift too hard and (I hear) wear out the pump.

Re: ~gettin ready to throw in a 700r4 tell me what you think~

Went ahead and decided on a 305 and a 700r4.... why the 305 and not a 350 or a 400sb, well because it was only 150 bucks for a known good motor. LOL. I hope it all works out, and no problems along the way.

How hard is it to setup the TV cable. I'm thinking about doing a 700r4 myself.

Your best bet is to do some research on the net at places like

or

If you have the right geometry on your throttle linkage and you have the self adjusting cable style. even a baby can do it.

Make sure that full throttle on the pedal is also full throttle on the carb.
Then adjust the cable all the way back and floor the throttle pedal.
you hear a ratling sound, when you release the pedal, your tv is adjusted just fine.

And a th700r4 isgreat in these trucks/suburbans. I am verry happy with my setup.
