Lots of words I'd use for it, but this is family friendly so I'll stick with just DUMB.

Re: GM eCrate package

I think its a great idea. Ive been warming up to the electric vehicles. I think it could possibly be a good package for a 67-72 Chevy truck. I seldom go far in my trucks, probably not more than a 100 mile trip out and back, and mostly they are used around town.

I also think it would be a cool package for my every languishing 65 Corvair convertible project.

I didnt see a price for the package though. That usually kills the deal for me, gas or electric.

I would like to think that as technology in the electric powered auto advances they will become more affordable, but I fail to see that in what's left of my lifetime. If they are going to get people on board the price has to come down.

Probably 5-6 years ago I researched the prices of building your own just out of curiosity, at that time they made kit's for the Porsche 911, Ford Ranger Pickup and possibly one other.
By the time you bought the vehicle and the kit you might as well have bought an Electric vehicle from a manufacturer.....it was not cheap by any means.

I'm fine waiting until I "have to" go electric. I enjoy, now same as always, building my own engines and driving them. Therefore, I am not in the market for anything different.

Re: GM eCrate package

First item on the list should turn most guys off what with all the trouble lith ion batteries give.

60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack
200 horsepower electric motor
DC-to-AC power inverter
DC-to-DC power converter
Wiring harnesses, controllers and water pumps for battery heating and cooling

I don't see this as affordable to own and operate any time soon either.
Did anyone notice the vehicle pictured with the battery pack is a square body blazer?

Re: GM eCrate package

.
I can imagine, for me, having a "gas" pedal, brake pedal, clutch, gear shift and a steering wheel in an eCrate equipped RWD vehicle would be...not much different than any other, aside from having to understand the difference between ICE and electric and not being able to hear the engine.

To get rolling, just let out the clutch...you can't stall it. Then hit the "gas" and shift when you want for the speed you want. Right?

There are a lot of variables. So from a dead stop, 0MPH, it's programmed so that when in gear and clutch is engaged we autothrottle +2% ( "gas" pedal can override ), otherwise no autothrottle.

This thing would RIP!

Re: GM eCrate package

I will resist making the EV move as long as I can. At some point we will likely all be forced into making the change by way of gov mandates and or shrinking oil supply/higher fuel pricing making it impractical to continue to operate an ICE anymore.
I hope I don't see that in my lifetime.

As a lifelong gearhead I still believe a motor/engine is supposed to make sounds and not that buzz from an e motor.

I know it's coming but it needs to stay with the general public and not in the Hot Rod scene. Hot Rodding is all about the sound, the smell, the burn outs. If we start to loose that then we might as well let golf carts in at the local cruise-in's.

Re: GM eCrate package

Now that would make a good electric golf cart propulsion unit. =-)

I like my vehicles to rumble, so like some have expressed, I won't be going electric until they pry the keys to my v8's from my cold dead hands.

Re: GM eCrate package

If it was setup correctly it wouldn't need a transmission period. Electric motors make max torque wherever you want them to. There is no need for a clutching mechanism since it can go from 0 to whatever rpm you desire. Limitation is the bearings or how fast the battery gets drained from amperage draw. From a practical stand point it is battery capacity, lifespan, and recharge times. Now if they made a nice little diesel electric like a locomotive I may be interested.

Re: GM eCrate package

I've pondered what it would be like to have a Blazer with independent electric motors at each of the four wheels. A setup like this wouldn't interest me at all. Where's the beautiful V-8 rumble?

Re: GM eCrate package

I think I’d sell my trucks before I went this route. As one who works in oil and gas, and owns a bunch of GM V8 powered vehicles, this isn’t happening for me.

Re: GM eCrate package

At the risk of sounding like a traitor, You could stick that package into an older Toyota HiLux 4x4 with a bed full of batteries and get crazy.

As for my chevy, I remain faithful to the small block.

Re: GM eCrate package

I can see this or something similar being of use to those that want or need an EV but don't want all the Infotainment and always connected crap that most modern EVs come with. Could also be of use to someone that is in a remote location and wants something they can refuel without a 50 mile trip to a gas station.
