What is this?
Whilst underneath my truck taking pictures of my carrier bearing for another post I noticed this odd looking block in between two coils of the rear spring (on both sides) I am assuming it is something that either lowers or raises the height of the spring, any ideas which or is it standard?

That strange thing was popular during the 60's..They were used to raise the coil just a bit.. Used a 1/2 inch breaker bar and twisted them into the coils to gain a bit of height in them..They might still be available thru JC Witney's catalog..

They are also used to restore ride height when your springs are sagging. I put a couple in my driver side rear spring to level the rear until I can put my new springs in.

I remember those things from my high school days.... We use to put those in the springs to "jack up" the rear end, and they worked pretty good with the old air shocks. The problem is that they actually weaken the spring by putting a heavier load on a more concentrated area. It was a cheap gimmick of it's day to get a desired effect on your suspension. Your probably better off just leaving them in. TJ

Judging from how collapsed the coil is just above that thing, I'd say leave it in, or you'll sag like crazy. If you get new springs, throw it away!

Those can still be bought at an autoparts store. I have noticed them at the OReillys I work for... strange little booger!

i dont see hwo in the world they got that thing in, the middle 3 coils normally touch on truck springs
