283ci Bracket Question

Anybody put headers on their stock 283 (1967 C10)? If so what did you do for the alternator bracket that bolted into the original exhaust manifold? My truck still has the factory heads that are not tapped for brackets.

And yes I know, I know! Just drop a 350 in it or just change the heads, but I just don't have the funds for that right now, but I do have a set of headers in the shop I can put on it.

Thanks guys!

Re: 283ci Bracket Question

I don't recall what the setup looks like, but when I put headers on the 305 SBC I had in my '68 Skylark, I used a 1/2" pipe nipple with a washer to space the bracket out, as the header flange was thinner than the manifold. The engine had tapped holes in the head, but I don't recall if I used them. Let's see a picture of what you have. Someone will certainly have a solution.

Re: 283ci Bracket Question

Will try to snap a pick next week and get it posted. My heads are not tapped for any accessories at all. Wish I had the money to just drop a crate 350 in it.

I assume you are running the factory ram horns now, I guess. I wouldn't swap them. I keep the ram horns.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: 283ci Bracket Question

I used Summit SUM-G4050 ($7.99) and SUM-G4051 ($8.99) brackets, which mounts the alternator on the LH/driver side. They are offered in both chrome and black, and mount to the #1 cylinder header bolts, not the head.

Re: 283ci Bracket Question

Thanks a lot. Those will be perfect.

I would keep the original rams horns, but they are rusted thru so I'll have to use what's available at the moment.

Well by the time you change the exhaust piping to work with the headers and pay the exhaust shop + buying the new brackets, you can replace the ram horns with some used ones and be back up running at the house without a trip to the exhaust shop.
