Stepside bed questions

Are stepside boxes pretty much the same from 67-72? How bout the fenders?

Any chance any later or earlier boxes and fenders are a match?

We are piecing together a project for a buddy and he was thinking of going with a cut down a fleetside long box to short, but now is considering going short box stepside

Re: Stepside bed questions

67-72 should be the same aside from no marker lights on the 67...i believe 73+ has the same box but different fenders and the same for 66 and older...i bought my 69 with an 88-98 "sportside" bed that doesnt exactly match perfectly but gets the job done

Re: Stepside bed questions

The 73 to 87 stepside box is a little bit different in the area where the step mounts to it and of course the fender mounting holes are different.
I was rereading a thread on this very thing just yesterday by Bill, Palf70step. I'll see if I can find it again.

Re: Stepside bed questions

Edit: I musta been typing while you were posting

67-72 stepside beds are all the same, except for the side marker as noted above for 67's.

That's where the similarities end. GM used a "similar" box from 1955-1987 but they are in no way the same.

You can swap any bed onto a 67-72 frame and with a little cutting or spacers (because the frames varied each generation, how the beds mounted was a little different) they can be made to fit.

In terms of fenders, no, you can't just swap bedsides and fenders around if they're of different years. The biggest reason is that each generation of bed used a significantly different step, which changed how low or high the bed dipped down in the front to meet that step. Just look at pics of 55-66, 67-72, and 73-87 steps and you'll see what I mean.

Now, you CAN use any combination of bed and fender if you have the correct piece of metal (or can fabricate it) to make the steps work, then you simply have to locate the holes for the fenders and weld up the old ones.

Bill (palf70step) had a great thread years ago of converting a 73-87 bed to be used with 67-72 fenders.

Re: Stepside bed questions

That is the thread. Now if your friend doesn't mind the difference in fenders he can use the 73-87 bed and fenders too. Some guys do.
