Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Yes, It is a factory Highlander Plaid Suburban, note the x642xx CUSTOM TRIM COMBINATION.

There is a dedicated plaid Suburban thread with more specific information and pictures.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=635035

Could a moderator please move these two posts to the referenced Suburban thread?

Under the message box click the "go advanced" tab, additional options then appear near the bottom of the screen - click the "manage attachments" tab - once the box pops up click the "browse" tab to select the file you want to upload (up to 5) then click the "upload" tab. Click "close window" in that box once pics uploaded...

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

This is it too. Its not a Cheyenne, someone put those badges here. The original seat is long gone. I am in the slow process of putting it back to original condition. Thanks to SS Tim for setting me straight on some minor issues. !!!

Thanks chevyland. I plan to, but it is going to take time. I just took the gas tank out looking for the build sheet. I didn't find it, so now it is time for some much needed cleaning.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I have one. But I guess its what you would call a "tribute." As far as I can tell, I haven't seen any factory 4x4 Highlanders. Its originally a swb 4x4 Custom/10 that I've restored to be a Custom Deluxe with the Highlander trim. If someone can come up with pictures or documentation of a factory 4x4 highlander, I'd be tickled pink!

Nick, That is a nice looking truck and well done on the interior. Can't wait to see it finished up. 4X4 Highlanders are not unknown but do seem to be few and far between. Of them the K20s, so far, are the fewest and here is Special-Ks truck (now being restored by its new owner). Please note the original carpet had been replaced with a mat due to damage.
But the fact is any Fleetside with Custom Deluxe trim C10-30 and K10-20 could be ordered with the Highlander trim upgrade. Most of the 4X4s are Blazers and you might want check out that thread too.

Curiously 4X4 Suburbans were not offered with the Highlander option.

Thanks for the compliments.
That is a nice one, but if I remember correctly Special-K said that truck was originally a c/20 that was converted to 4wd. I don't think I've seen a 4x4 highlander pickup on here through all the searches I've conducted.

No, Here's the story. I gave info I learned from another member here not long after I bought it in '04. He knew the truck from CO where it came from and knew the guy who did the work before the buyer who owned it between us. The truck was all original and very nicely kept, all original paint, which it still had when I bought it. It had an accident like a tree or something came down hard on or into the cab. This talented friend of his bought the truck and repaired it by using a donor Cheyenne Super C/20 which is the cab on it now. I bought it for being so rare because I have been an avid K/20 guy since these trucks were young and was heavy into collecting rare examples.
I thought I had this member's name, but when I later contacted him to get this guy who did the work's info, it turned out I had kept the wrong member's name. Their names were similar. I contacted Cheyenne10 in OR or WA by mistake. This was when I first joined the site in 11/04 and was unfamiliar with using computers. I bought the truck in July that year. So I lost the trail of ownership and hopes of fact finding on the truck. Therefore, I never pushed the truck's originality in threads like this. I didn't have what we all know is needed to bare the burden of truth. All I have is hear-say that I know is true. This guy contacted me and gave the detailed story. So I was fine, and so was my friend who bought it (a collector) with it just being a really cool K/20. The truck has a KE2 VIN, regardless. The previous owner did not take good care of it, it needed a lot of mechanical work and he dinged it up, had mismatched mirrors, wheels and tires, and broken leafs. But he paid good money. On the title it showed it originally had a lien for $11 grand. This would have been at least a couple years prior to '04. I paid half that for it and rebuilt the mechanics to have a nice driving truck with cosmetic wear

yfs200p, that is quite unique. They keep coming out of the woods. I am assuming that is a short bed. wow! and a 4x4! I like it.

Could you post a picture of the SPID? I would love to see that.

When I bought the truck it had had a glove box swap at some point, so I don't have any of the original options. But the vin decodes to a 72 SWB 4x4 350 built in Baltimore, MD. I wasn't around in 72, as a matter of fact my parents hadn't even met yet in 1972 (LOL). But i built this truck to be exactly what i would have ordered from the dealership if i was buying a brand new chevy in 1972. It turned out nice and I'm pretty proud of it.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Mitchell72 has one of the lost Highlanders and I am glad he took the time to ask some questions back in 12/2012. Even happier he has decided to now bring it back to its former self. The truck has a fairly unique option grouping in that it does not have chromed hub caps/wheelcovers or bumpers but does have the Deluxe Two-Tone in Hugger Orange. Thanks for posting the pics Mitchell.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

You may be right about Tim's truck, having never seen the SPID, but as I remember it has always been represented to me as an original K20 Highlander.
The other 4x4 20 Highlander I know of is known to have been converted and apparently with 6 lug parts!

The data books state Highlander Plaid as avaliable on C10-30 Fleetsides & Longhorns, no exclusions on Blazers and specifically C10-20 Suburbans only.

The Highlander Promo Package flyers state only 10 20 and 30 without definition as to "C" or "K" plus of course that it was also available in Blazers and Suburbans as well.

Having seen pictures of "K" Highlanders in addition to Tim's I felt they were legitimate production vehicles possibly as Promos or special order. It is curious that they would even restrict the trim option at all considering there are no special parts other than the seat cover.

At this point I cannot find a "K" pickup plaid SPID in my collection but have lots to look through.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

C10 Long Bed YG7 "B": Original avocado interior (always covered, nearly pristine) and original 307 engine (112K). Husband bought it super clean (1-owner before him) and rust-free. He had it painted in 2009 (it was Medium Green and white - yeah, with the avocado), added Tonneau cover, green spray bed liner, new chrome body trim, wheels & tires. Has SPID, original sales receipt, service records. He rarely drives it but it always starts right up. (That right there is the extent of my knowledge)

We joined this site to learn more about the Highlander phenomenon…You guys don't disappoint.

He's not that into old trucks, but I guess he thought this one was interesting. As far as I'm concerned it has always been for sale.

Is it safe for y'all to post pictures of SPID? No concern for unscrupulous types to copy/forge? Maybe superimpose a "watermark"…?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

That is a nice truck and the changes you made only enhance the appearance. As far as Spid pics go, I've been on this its since 2003 and have seen lots of people post spid pics and have never heard of any having any fraudulent issues because of it. I have sen spids posted with the last 6 digits of the serial number taped over which would render the spid useless for fraud purposes.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Nicely done color change! Do you happen to know the color code/brand of paint?

Like Greg says we don't have a known problem posting them and if it concerns you there are options.

1)Not posting
2)Clipping the entire top off.
3)Clipping or covering the partial or whole VIN only.

Of these the last six digits is the most preferable short of a full SPID. That way we can see the year and plant. These are both important in my SPID research.

Here is a Custom Deluxe/30 Longhorn Highlander Promo Package "C" Custom Camper so altered (hope to add this truck to my collection too).

* VIN/Model Decoders
* Power Team Charts (engine/transmission/gear ratio)
* Post Your Pickup SPID Blazer SPID Suburban/Panel SPID
* RTFM

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I don't know guys… Still think someone could copy a SPID photo, doctor/age it, in order to stick in a glovebox and try to pass off truck/options as original.
