Anybody replaced a 5.4 with a 5.3?
Apparently 5.3 Chevy engines are cheap and plentiful in the junkyards, the reason being they are so reliable and nobody needs replacements. Ford on the other hand seems to have forgotten, if they ever knew how, to build an engine. The 5.4 is a disaster with it spitting out spark plugs and breaking manifolds and bolts etc. etc. I have a nephew in law who has had all kinds of these problems with his. I think if I had been foolish enough to buy one of these and it gave me problems I'd look into putting in a GM engine and transmission. Anybody done this before?

There have been many LS into Mustangs....mainly early series Fox bodies...
See http://www.brphotrods.com/products/7...ang/index.html Just buy the right Chevy vehicle in the first place and be done with it....

Why waste all that time and effort when you can just buy a chevy with a LS already installed?

The saying goes don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If one of these were gifted I might try it. Of course the driveshaft would need to go too. Apparently they weld the bearing in place and it costs $1800 to replace it. Nah, wouldn't be worth it. Tow it to the scrap yard.
Let the diesel guys yank theirs out and replace them with the Cummins. Maybe it's worth it for them. |

I agree with Tom. Why swap the best engine into the worst pickup, EVER!!! There's too many other stupid ford screwups in the pickup body itself, to think a Chevy engine would make the deal near as good as a Chevy truck!!!
Nothing good about a ford, nothing..... |

Re: Anybody replaced a 5.4 with a 5.3?
Sometimes fords are good for parts.
I bought a 64 1/2 ton for 200 bucks. Nobody would buy it because it had a poncho 455 and turbo 400 in it. I yanked the poncho and sold it with trans for a cool 2 grand. Found a 302 and c4 and installed it. Sold the truck for 1500 to a local kid. Took the profits and built an L-88 from a 427 I bought that came in a 68 impala. And around and around it goes! |

There is one thing. It is not a Dodge.

Re: Anybody replaced a 5.4 with a 5.3?
I have a 98 f150 with the 5.4, and the ONLY think I dont like about it is the 5.4. Too many issues, underpowered, just sucks. But truck has good brakes (my 98 gmc sure didnt..scary), and is built very solid. Would be a great truck with a gm drivetrain but not even close to worth doing. You might find one person somewhere online that has done the swap, but it will be rare as it would a real pain and anything with a 5.4 is an old truck...not classic, just old.

Re: Anybody replaced a 5.4 with a 5.3?
I was watching some stuff on Youtube by the car wizard. According to him the 5.4 is a bad engine but both GM and Dodge in certain years have also had their share of problems.
