Trans / Converter Help Needed

So I pulled the engine to swap oil pans and install a 700R4 in place of the TH350. I have a narrow bellhousing (off a 90 degree V6) not from a V8. I have an adapter on the way to facilitate mating the trans to the engine, but my problem is TC selection.

Does anyone know if a 12" converter will fit in the narrow 700 bellhousing?

Re: Trans / Converter Help Needed

700R4 originally fitted to a V6 has a lower torque handling capacity than a standard V8 transmission. (Less clutches etc)

What engine is this going behind?
Modifications?
Has the trans been checked for wear?
2WD or 4WD...

You will need a throttle valve setup for the carb...do not run a 700R4 without one in place and correctly adjusted.

There several aftermarket small convertors for 700R4...but I strongly suggest you source a V8 unit to start the process with.

Re: Trans / Converter Help Needed

Pretty sure a lot of guys put v6 convertors in to get a cheap higher stall with their v8's, so you should be able to run a stock v6 convertor.

Re: Trans / Converter Help Needed

Thanks for the replies guys...

Its going behind a rwd turbocharged inline 250...im aware of the lower tq rating and it hasnt been checked. Going to put it in and see what happens...hoping for the best (and I cant afford a performance rebuild right now).

The converter I am going to run will be in the 1800-2200 stall range so I'm a bit concerned that a 12" converter will fit under the narrow bellhousing.

And I know I have some work to so on the TV cable...especially since its a fitech injection unit.

Re: Trans / Converter Help Needed

You're already running fuel injection.....Why not run a 298mm 4L60E with a controller? https://fitechefi.com/product/go-shi...nd-alone-unit/

The 60° Bellhousing doesn't share the same dowel locations as a 90° Bellhousing.....Meaning you MUST check that the Bell is centered with a dial indicator! Don't assume the adapter is machined correctly, This is easiest to do with a Bell off a late model 4L60E as it's removable & has a perfect circle to reference.

Re: Trans / Converter Help Needed

You may want to reconsider the 7004r. I installed a 2004r replacing the TH350 and now wish I had spent the extra and gone with an electronic controlled automatic OD trans. Not sure the 7004r works the same, but my 2004r out of a donor Buick does not shift where I would like it. The governor and to a lesser point TV cable controls when the trans shifts, both part throttle and full throttle. Where this shows up is say the trans is out of a car with high 2's rear gears. It is calibrated to shift per road speed and throttle opening. Now put that trans in a truck with 4.10 gears. The trans thinks it's going much faster (driveshaft revolutions) than the car no matter how heavy your on the throttle. Under normal driving I shift into 2nd at 5 MPH, 3 by 10-15. See the issue? A electron ic controlled trans via a standalone controller can be set up anyway you want. Firmness of shift can also be tailored to your liking. Some controllers can even have a couple of programs which you can select at any time. Easy with the wife, balls to the walls when you want.
