292 distributor install - sanity check
Just want to confirm I am doing this right.
Timing mark set at "0", on compression stroke. This is just about one rotation of the crankshaft after the intake valve opened. Distributor installed with the rotor pointing to the number one cylinder. Not sure how critical this is, I figure the rotor can point anywhere as long as the number one wire goes to that position. Distirbutor plug wires installed, firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. |

Damn, still runs rough. And, the timing is right about 10-12BTDC.
Probably need to do a compression check. Maybe a new distributor too. |

Reset your valves with the motor running.
A few of them show a lot of thread above the nut. Could have a few valves open a touch. |

Compression check, only 2 and 6 have compression, the others do not have any.

Re: 292 distributor install - sanity check
When removing the head on a 63 C20, 292, the last two pushrods do not have enough clearance for removal. Does the engine need to come out or can I loosen the head and get them out?

Re: 292 distributor install - sanity check
You dont need to remove the head...at least right now...
By turning down the rocker adjusters so far, you are holding the valves open... Get the engine set to TDC on compression...Back off the rockers on Cyl 1 until they are just loose on the top of the valves. Turn the engine 1/3rd of a turn then set same looseness on cyl 5, turn 1/3rd turn more, then set cyl 3, turn 1/3 more and set cyl 6, turn 1/3rd more and set 2 and finally 1/3rd and cyl 4. Leave the rocker cover off and start the engine...do not over rev it! You will hear lots of "clacky" noise....start to slowly turn down 1/4 turn at a time, on each rocker nut until each valve stops clacking...dont over tighten any of the rockers...the engine will start to run rough...

Re: 292 distributor install - sanity check
Pulled the head off, figured it’s time for a top end check. Worst case, we put a big block in it.

Re: 292 distributor install - sanity check
You probably don't need to yet, but if you absolutely had to pull pushrods on Cylinders #5 + 6, you could remove the passenger side motor mounts and rotate the block to the right.
I've heard of people who bored 1'' holes in the arch of the firewall for pushrod clearance. We got around doing that, when changing out a broken #6 exhaust valve spring, by making a 1-1/2 x 1'' almond-shaped hole in a spring compressing lever, and working it backhanded or upside down. No mounts loosened, no new holes. The end of the pushrod came up thru the almond hole, when compressing the spring. A ''specialized'' Special Tool.

Re: 292 distributor install - sanity check
I was correct in my diagnosis - removed the head and replaced the head gasket. In the process, I cleaned up all the valves and seats and replaced the valve stem seals. Did a compression check when it was all assembled, and I have compression on all cylinders.
Just started it up for about 10 seconds and it sounds 150% better than before. What a relief, I thought I was going to be in deep on this one. All I need to do now is fix up the exhaust pipe and I'm ready to go. |
