Rear axle & wheel bearings ('72 C20)
Hi guys,
I have a '72 C20 (RWD) My mechanic told me that wheel bearings need to be replaced soon. Rockauto offers a variety of wheel bearings. Which ones shall i pick ? Judging by the cover my rear axle is Dana 60.

Timken, Skf, and Toyo are all pretty good usually. I have also used National with some success but wouldn't say they are as good as the other 3 brands. I have also used alot of FAG bearings on foreign cars.

I would inspect the axle shafts first to see what the bearing running surface is like. If not perfectly smooth I would buy the repair bearing which extends the bearing outwards to run on an unused section of the axle.

If that is a Dana 60 (looks like it) and is a full floating axle then the bearings don't ride on the axle shafts. You can actually pull the shafts out and the wheel is still attached to the housing. Since it's a C20 I'm betting that's what he has.

Re: Rear axle & wheel bearings ('72 C20)
oil bath bearings its so rare to need changed out i would ask just how he knows this for a FACT .
i have turned a wrench as a pro for 15 years and now as a hobby for 5+ more and i play with a lot of 3/4 and 1ton stuff and its real rare to swap them out . as said timken / koyo ( not toyo ) . there the top 2 these days still . and factory installed . and these oil bath wheel bearings dont get grease packed like the fronts do .

I agree with Timken or Koyo bearings. And don't forget you will need the seals too. CR and National are the seals I typically use.

Timken first.
Koyo and SKF second. Drops way off after those three. I am a retired now but am a mechanical engineer who did technical procurement for John Deere. We were very picky on bearings at Deere and did a lot of testing of bearings. I would even recommend that you pay extra for the Timkens over the Koyos and SKFs if you have to do so. We did at Deere. |

Re: Rear axle & wheel bearings ('72 C20)
It is supposed to be a light coating to protect them until the oil reaches the bearings.

or old trick a heavy truck tech showed me . jack 1 side way up let it sit for 10-15 min . then swap sides and do the same . then recheck the diff oil level . road test and check 1 last time and good to go . gear oil wont wash out the wheel bearing grease you will be packing them with .
