Tailgate removal

Am I doomed to sitting here for an hour with a box end and a beer to get my tailgate off,
or are these things supposed to have the cut-out so you can slide them off one side like the newer ones?
Or am i completely missing something, like a brain.

Assuming fleetside, you have to unbolt one of the lower trunions (lower pivot point hinge), and lift up tailgate on that side removing trunion and all.

Take one of the trunions (lower hinge) loose. They are held in place with two 1/2" bolts. Once you do that then you can raise the tailgate on that end and pull the gate and trunion out. You also need to take the links loose and the way you do that is to push up at the joint and lift the tailgate untill the slot lines up with the pin on the tailgate. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Thats funny...

I took mine off for the first time yesterday and was wondering about the procedure. Fortunately I had a Haynes manual for the truck lying around....


Do it like described above (removing one of the trunnions and pushing UPWARD on the joint of the supports to line up the slots that connect them to the gate).

I'm a complete novice and it took all of 3 minutes.


Still, it is an excellent an excuse to sit there for an hour with a wrench and a few brewskis...just admiring the handiwork of The General...and being glad you own it! It works for me all the time...and the wife is non the wiser! LOL

i just cut slots in my so it slids on and off like the newer ones. i wasnt too worried about my tailgate though since it is a little rusty and needs to be replaced.

My dad modified mine in 84. It's an easy job and still has the strength.
