Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Yeah I was planning on using the '88-'98 K1500 rotors. I've already got the dimensions on them and the brackets will be this style, just a different spacer. I might see about ordering some spacers cut for these this week.

My 67 is sitting on a square body 4x4 half ton chassis so it is 6-lug and I have a set of the El Dorado rear calipers.

I was thinking that the 88-98 new body style 4x4 slip on front rotors might work for this. I keep meaning to grab a set from Pull & Save to test out but always run out of time when I am out there. I will look them up on NAPA's site and get some idea of the offset and thickness to see if it is even worth picking up a set to test out.

The rear rotors on my 03 Tahoe might be an option too if your wheels can clear 13" rotors. They have more rotor offset so they might push the caliper out of the wheel far enough to make them work with 15" wheels.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Yeah I've found similar ones from the Savanaha vans. The only problem with putting say a 13" rotor on the back is that you really should run one on the front as big or bigger. That is where it becomes a little more involved and $$. Those Tahoe rotors are really deep.....about 1/2" deeper than the Astro rotors.

The matched front rotors on the Tahoe are only 12.0" diameter. I wonder why they are not bigger than the rear or at least the same size?

Turns out the rotors on the front of the 03 Tahoe are the exact same ones on the Astro van of the same year. Makes them a whole lot more common and easier to find.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Yeah, after I posted that, I looked up the front rotors for the Express/Savanah vans and they use a 12" rotor on the front also. That doesn't make much sense regarding what I know about brake systems. I wonder if the ABS helps compensate for the larger rear rotor? If you were to put together a non ABS system like this, you would have to seriously meter down the rear line pressure.

Yes I do have more parts now, I got them on Tuesday. No there is no machining required on this conversion. I could have a set ready to ship on Tuesday. Let me know.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

The applications and years are listed on the first page of this thread.

Basically you will need front rotors for a '92-'02 AWD Astro/Safari van. The D52 calipers were used on the trucks from '71-'87, as well as many full sized cars from the 60's and 70's. If you need a D52 caliper with a built in e-brake you will need the rear calipers for a '76-'78 Eldorado. As for hoses you can either use hoses from a '71-'72 pickup, hoses for a '79 Chevette, or any of the aftermarket braided stainless hoses.

Is there any other parts you need help with?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I've been cruising Autozone checking for parts and I'm a little confused. I keep reading the d52's are on 71-87 trucks but the parts differ on AZ's website. I did run across a note on the 84' calipers that says it is for J5 brake system. Is this what we would use?
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...vice=234655186

Or will the ones they show for my truck work, I have a 78?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

That Autozone link does not specify which thickness rotor that caliper is for. An '84 could have either the 1" thick rotors or the 1.25" thick rotors. I'm pretty sure the '78 only came with a 1.25" thick rotor. You want the D52 caliper for a 1.25" thick rotor. One way to ID a D52 caliper is that the center to center of the slide bolts is aprox 7" and typically has a 2-15/16" diameter piston. The JB/JD7 calipers have a 3-5/32" diameter piston.

Do you know the vehicle application for the JB/JD7 calipers with 3-5/32" pistons? I have never seen a D52 caliper with anything different from the 2 15/16" piston. Thanks.

Hello Jim

No I do not. Have you checked with Ruff Stuff Specialties, or DIY4x? You will want to be sure to get brackets specifically for a Dana 60 with the GM housing ends.
