Intake Manifold

Seen the question before but cannot find it now. I am installing a Eldebrock manifold on 62 283. Under the original there is that cannister looking thing to the rear of the block. I know it can be removed but how is done? And if I remember the area was blocked with a freeze plug.

Re: Intake Manifold

The oil separator is held by a single 1/4-20 bolt down in the lifter valley. You're right, a freeze plug will seal off the hole in the block. You'll need to provide crankcase ventilation some other way now, usually through vents in the valve covers.

Re: Intake Manifold

After you remove the bolt, the canister may be stuck in there pretty tight and need some whacking toward the front of the engine to get it free. This may dislodge a lot of crud depending on how sludged up the engine looks inside. Be sure to cover all the lifters and valley to keep the debris out of the crankcase, and after installing the manifold an oil change is cheap insurance in case anything did make it into the engine.

Re: Intake Manifold

Thanks for the info. I will be removing that. I noticed the open nipple in the back and thats what reminded me that it was something that could be removed. Once again thanks
