Collector Tools

I bought the 50 year Skil Saw(1987) and also the 75 year Skil Saw (2012)

I have the blade to the 50 year and Saw and blade for the 75 year and my son has the 50 year Saw ,

If they make the 100 year Skil Saw I am pretty sure my son will have to buy that one if they still make them.

Let's see what you all have collected through the years

Re: Collector Tools

I don't really think of it as "Vintage", but my old jigsaw I guess qualifies. A friend came by and he was afraid to use it at first as it was the first all metal housing electric tool he had ever used. I think I got it from JC Penny in about 1969. She still doing what I need of her though.

Still got it and still works for ya ,, that's alright

I used to have a Porter cable 1/2 heavy duty drill motor years ago ,,but did not keep it . it had a metal case like your jig saw. I bet you can get that little jig saw in places a new one will not fit,, they make em bigger now.

Re: Collector Tools

I really wanted a vise, but not a new one. I wanted a old , durable , made in the USA one.

I bought a Chas Parker 434, it will need some attention, but its just like this one.

And this thing weighs over 100 lbs it seems.

Re: Collector Tools

I have my dad's Black & Decker D3030 Type 1 circular saw from the '80s. Still cuts like a champ! I also have his old copper-headed dead blow hammer that I've used the handle to drive in many a piston on rebuilds. That thing is ancient. We call it Mjölnir.

Here are some old oil tools, an old torch and soldering iron, as well.

I have an old Disston no. 43 hand saw that was my dad's. These were made until 1918. In very good condition (I still use it at times) except for one of the levels is missing. Similar to this pic:

Thanks Larry, that means a lot because I bet you have seen a lot of handsaws! After researching the age of it etc online, I guess they are collectible now but there's not enough money for me to ever part with it.
I have 2 sons & a daughter and I bet one of them will appreciate it some day.

Re: Collector Tools

I have plenty of what would be considered vintage tools that I bought new, and some that are earlier than my time. I don't think I've bought any put out as collectors, though. I have an old Skil worm drive. I still call all circular saws Skil saws. Bosch bought Skil and if they still use the name it's on cheap grade stuff. The Black & Decker Sawcats were the best sidewinders ever made. I have two of those, 40 years old. There was a Super Sawcat with a blade brake and a bigger shoe plate, but I didn't want the extra gimmick that could fail. I went through a time where one Sawcat was missing and the other needed a switch. I got by with my Dewalt 18v cordless for quite a while. That saw is from the mid-90s and still works great, which says a lot for a modern tool. I went out and bought the Dewalt that is pretty much a clone of the Super Sawcat. Then I saw one at a flea market with case for $40 so I have two of those also. You don't see those offered at the big box stores.

When I first got started in the early-70s I bought reconditioned Craftsman power tools. I don't have the circular but still have the 1/2" drill and saber saw.

I'll have to take some pictures tomorrow. I have an old Craftsman table saw and drill press back when they were top quality. I have a DeWalt/AMF radial arm saw that is old and cool looking that you guys will like. In the '80s I bought stationary tools that were all Delta, a table saw and jointer come to mind. I'll wait for pictures to go on any farther. I like old tools!

I worked for a Electrical Company back in the 80ies and they had all vintage Porter Cable tools .. and would not bend to buy some Skil Saws that had the blade on the left side for to easily see the blade ..never liked the table on them Porter Cable saws..

Waiting for your photos of vintage tools,, you just might have a Porter Cable Saw??

Re: Collector Tools

Mike

Back in my days of working as a rough carpenter building tall walls with lots of whalers and sometimes using ship lap boards instead of plywood,,we guys had to have sharp handsaws at all times .. and lots of times we had to cut holes In the walls ..

So,, after getting our handsaws sharpened every week or two weeks by the contractor ,our saws would get ground down until the end was like a key hole saw,, which we liked for cutting hole is the forms .. ''

I had an old saw ground down to key hole size on the end and it got stolen from a job site ,,,and after that I had other saws and that did not get sharpened down as much.,,,,, ( Skil Saws were more plentiful on the job sites) here is the last one I had while working construction ..

I told my Dad that I was getting ready to mount a winch on my trailer and he said, "use my big drill". I had forgotten about this drill since I hadn't seen it in years. Glad I used it - it cut slow and steady with no bogging while cutting through steel.

I've got one of those 1/2" Sears drills, in it's box and although slow, it gets the job done!!

I have a 1/2" drill similar to that one. No bogging for sure! It's a "Trustworthy" and it's a torque monster. Reversible but single speed only. It was left on a job site nearly 50 years ago after everyone else was transferred out.

Re: Collector Tools

1/2 hp, or 5/8, is mucho torque-o. Like a table saw motor.

The only person who wants a Rigid circular saw is one who doesn't know sheet from Shinola. Pure Home Depot crap. Rigid was a plumber's tool maker... thread cutters, bolt cutters, and such. Never carpenter tools. That's all Home Depot proprietary crap. Milwaukee made great plumber assist tools as will, such as Hole Hogs, hammer drills, Screw Shooters and the granddaddy Sawzall . The big box tools they offer are nowhere near the quality they were known for.

Here are some tools I have. I don't have a workshop. My stationary tools are stuffed into my little barn I call the shop. I drag/roll them out onto the slab to use when needed. So pardon the less than proper condition from gathering dust and such. I won't let anything pit, just gets a film. I scuff it up and apply mineral oil from time to time but not often as I should.

I'm going to start with my prize possession, the real plumb bob my dad gave me. I keep that in my bedroom. It's a very heavy chunk of solid brass with a hard tip. It's at least 6" long. You can't buy a decent plumb bob any more

I'm digging that plumb bob. I bought mine in the '80s when I built an addition on my previous house, and it isn't even that nice.

Re: Collector Tools

My dad cut our roof out and built a big dormer to make another bedroom when I was maybe 5 or 6 and he had that plumb bob then.

I haven't been using this stuff lately. It's too hot to drag it out for pictures. Plus next time I do I plan to do some reconditioning. But it all works great!

My little Porter Cable router lives in the router table, which I do use pretty often

The Craftsman drill press came from the older woman's place as well. it has that engine turned trim. I didn't get the top cover with it. Works great

When I was 22 I got the trim carpentry contract for Ryland Homes in Maryland. Jim Ryan was a nephew of the owners of Ryan Homes, you might have heard of. Now Dan Ryan Homes (his son) is big around here. These are all big production tract home builders. I look back now and wonder how I did it with the tools I had, and solo. No generator, just used a hand saw, a miter box*, and a Yankee to hang doors, install kitchens and baths, run molding, Stair rail, and shelving. I can't remember, but I guess I used a hand drill. I remember back then contractors would say "It's not worth it if you can't make $100 a day", which was my goal back then. Sure beat $5 an hour!

* Not a chop saw. Not electric miter box that is simply called a miter box these days
