Alignment on '99 Yukon questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi, I am usually on the 60 -66 forum. I recently bought a 2wd Yukon that is wearing tires on the outside. An alignment shop told me that they needed to remove the knockouts on the frame mounted bracket so they could get enough movement to adjust it. They want $150.00 to remove them. Are they telling me the truth? If they are, does the knockout side mirror the slot on the other side of the bracket? Can they actually be knocked out or do they have to be cut? If they have to be cut out, do you drill a hole at each end of the slot and join the holes with a die grinder?

Yes they have knock outs from the factory. Back when i was doing alignments i used a special tool to knock them out made by OTC. $150 is a smoking deal if it includes the alignment.

Thats a little high. It whould take about 2 hours including the alignment.
get some quotes from other shops. And on another note if the camber and caster are within spec then toe in whould be the only thing that needs adjusting ( being toed in too far can cause outer tire wear) So if there trying to sell you this service without checking the alignment its just a up-sale you dont need. GM put those knock outs in there for a reason so the alignment will "hold" if they dont need to come out leave them alone

You can have the alignment checked without removing the tabs/knockouts. I also believe you can adjust toe in/out also without removing the tabs/knockouts. If the camber is out, I would look at worn suspension components like, upper/lower ball joints and control arm bushings.

Thanks for the input. I took the knockouts out and took it to another shop. It is much better. I still have to steer it more than I think I should while driving on a straight highway. Any suggestions on this problem? I have not tried any steering box adjustments.

they have the caster messed up sounds like to much negistve caster when would require alot of constant corrections on straight road

Take it back and have them do it again. The father of one of my coworkers was alignment issues and had it lined up. He took it back and had them check it and they said it was in "spec". It continued, so he took it to the dealer and the alignment was ok, but he had a bunch of worn components that were letting it change while he was going down the road. I think he replaced all 4 ball joints, upper control arm bushings, and a tie rod end. Once it was all replaced, he took it back and had have it fine tuned, and the dealer said it ended up back almost in the factory locations.

As you know now, you do have to remove the alignment knock outs. There are two for EACH control arm bushing mount. There are several companies that make caster/camber alignment CAMS to install in place of the original bolts. You need one of these kits to properly align the truck. These cams set caster and camber. If that truck has now worn parts, and is aligned properly it should drive perfect!

cparman, my yukon has the eccentric washers for the bolts. Do I need something else or are we describing the same thing in different terms? By the way, I replaced all the worn parts. all ball joints, upper and lower control arm bushings, and a tie rod ends.

if you have the eccentric washers you should be good, (depending on how far out of spec it is) the plus side is you only remove the knock outs and install cam bolts once !
