Re: Factory Blazer Colors

I had a 69 gmc parts truck, that was silver. It was original paint on firewall, and hidden areas.
Hugger orange was available in many different years, and on many different models, from 69-71, and again in 76. It came with several different names. Pontiac called it Carousel red. On Corvettes it was called Monaco Orange, etc.
Car Hugger is a little more orange than the truck hugger.

I saw a photo of the 511 ochre ( mustard ) color couple of weeks and I think it is the same color called wheatland yellow on OMJ's brochure. Maybe General Motors wanted to use fancy names on advertising and marketing materials. Probably another example of one department in a large corporation not knowing what another department is doing and or not doing. Anyone with a blue Blazer or pickup out there? What is the name and the color code listed on the option decal in the glovebox? I'm going to guess / bet it's not hawaiian blue or mariner blue, but medium blue, bright medium blue...something like that.
It's not surprising to me to see these SPIDS with different color names. Could be marketing as you say, but I also see alot of inconsistencies. Don't know if it's the person typing these things, or maybe it's just a monday truck?? Making a living restoring cars I've seen alot of strange things, different plants have different procedures and the same model car will have slight variances (or even screw ups).
To throw a real curve ball in here, my 72 Blazer pictured above (post 12?) is an original Tangier Orange, still with alot of it's original paint (floors and underhood as well as jambs,,,as you can see in the pics) But the color on my SPID is "medium olive". It's the original SPID as serial numbers match and everything else appears correct for options. Was this a monday truck?? Definately a typo on mine as far as the color goes....

Even type writers were high tech back then (that's all we had when I was in school). I'm sure these SPIDS were generated from some form of a printer,,,but the information had to be put in there, and obviously someone was sleeping on the job when they did mine.

This was the original yellow on my 1970

But hated it for 10 years and painted it Hugger Orange a few years ago.

I actually like those softer yellows. Reminds me of GM Butternut Yellow circa 66-68.

They remind me of the old yellow-green Forest Service trucks, but yeah, I've always liked that color.

Re: Factory Blazer Colors

Wow, I've kinda been out of touch with the forum lately but I'm glad I checked in. What made me write this post in the first place was I had seen a silver 67 or 68 (can't remember exactly) out at Medina Lake. From the road it looked to be original and was even for sale! I never went back and looked at it to see its true condition or if it was original paint. I kick myself all the time for not looking into it!

I'm pretty sure this is Hawaii Blue. It's actually a little darker than the pics appear. Obviously I'm just getting started on restoration.

1972 525 yellow, with a twist. I had them go light on the green pigment. Not much different.

Re: Factory Blazer Colors

Here is the very original paint for code 510. It is obviously faded and lighter then stock. Looks more like the 507 for 69.

Also what lift do you have.
I just picked up a 71 GMC and like the lift your K5 has.
What size tires. Not sire if I would want to go over 31x10.50x15.

Those look like 33's. Which are really nice looking.

Thanks

Re: Factory Blazer Colors

Im not sure if this would be the right thread to post on but I am currently getting the body work done on my 1977 K5, I've been told that the color is either a Hawaiian blue or a medium blue but they both looked the same to me on the info I found on google. does anyone have the color charts for 73-77 or that can tell me the difference? I really want to keep my color original. Thanks!Name: fullsizeoutput_15.jpg

Re: Factory Blazer Colors

I have a 1978 Chevrolet K-20 4WD I purchased new on Saturday July 8, 1978. It is a Cheyenne. The color is Mariner Blue Metallic. The Hawaiian Blue is not metallic. Both are what I would call a medium blue...or that type of category. The problem I have seen and found with body colors on these trucks ( 1967 - 1972 and 1973 - 1980 ) is more often than not the 'name' for the color listed in the brochures do not always match the 'name' post on the SPID. Evidently, General Motors thought they needed a "fancy name" for colors listed on the sales brochures, but that color name did not need to match the color name posted on the SPID. In addition, the paint code charts for PPG, Dupont, etc. usually show the more generic names identical but sometimes different than the paint code names posted on the SPID's. Hope that helps.

I currently have a 1969 GMC "Longhorn" (I know it did not go by that name) made in Freemont, California that is clearly labelled on the SPID as being Silver. And it clearly has its original silver poly paint everywhere. It is the only one I have ever seen. The paint did not hold up very well and is totally worn through in many places. I am not going to repaint it. I wonder if every factory made every color.
And as far as the controversy about Hugger Orange is concerned I owned a 1970 Chevy that was clearly labelled "Hugger Orange" on the SPID. Just my two cents worth. I know there is a lot of discussion about all the different names for what is called Hugger Orange on my truck. I love to hear personal comments and experiences that folks have had with names and codes on their trucks.

I think the black tops looks great with the lighter colors. Doesn't seem like I've seen many with a black top - anyone know if it was a somewhat rare option?

My 70 was originally medium olive but currently has the paint delete option as well!!
