I did similar things to my 69 back in the first couple years after I got it in 1989.

Dual exhaust with generic turbo mufflers got rid of that choked down, restricted feeling, and gave the 307 some guts. Honestly, it felt like it had 25% more power.

Power steering parts from a wrecked 71-72 truck, made a huge difference. My teenage daughter loved it!

I later installed a NOS 450cfm Holley Economizer carb on Q-jet manifold (total investment of around $65). The results made me think twice before ever bad-mouthing a 307 again!

I converted to Power brakes before ultimately going to disc brakes from a 85 C10 several years later.

Have fun!

Re: When did you buy your truck and how much?

My first K/20, a '71 Custom, I bought in '82 I think. Paid $1,000. Medium Olive Poly w/Black interior 307/4spd/4.57s. No two tires and wheels the same, needed brakes, had rust. An older mechanic I knew had it. His wife had left him with his three boys, ran off with the new Z/28 he was paying on. He went through a rough time and the K/20 was being neglected. The tires and brakes put him in a ditch, so he dragged it back home and decided to sell it. I always wanted a K/20 and was happy as can be to buy it. Months earlier I had been in a head-on in my '69 Power Wagon (W200) and had driven all summer in my '55 1st Design, all original 6cyl/3spd... a 45-50 mph truck. And I had a girlfriend 30+/- miles away. I ordered parts to do the brakes along with headers, exhaust, tach, and lift kit to use the tires off the Dodge. Brought it all over to his house and drove out in my first K/20 high on life!

Re: When did you buy your truck and how much?

[quote='68OrangeSunshine;9213887]I bought my Orange '68 C/10 Stepside in Pasadena, Calif, in June 1973* for $1200. It had a factory 292 L6, SM465 4-speed, 3.73:1 gear ratio, 7.00x17.5 tires, West Coast Jr Mirrors. 516 Orange.
All manual. Most likely a fleet truck. Only 6 entries listed on the SPID.
The odometer read just under 80,000 miles. Now it shows about 406,000.

*Hey! It's our 50th anniversary.
[/quote]

So I never answered the third query: Stock or Modified?

Body is stock. Except for the P/S front fender, which got an off-colored GMC fender as a replacement in the mid-'80s...
April '22, I got T-Boned on the right rear quarter and my current step fender is crushed in. I bought a '68 P/S step fender in gold, but have yet to mount it.
I rebuilt a junkyard 292 in 1977 at MCAS Yuma. The Sgt in charge of the Base Hobby Shop Garage traded me out my stock folding bench seat for an electric-powered '69 F*rd Thunderbird Bench-bottom/Bucket-back seat. I've had it re-vinyled in Saddle a couple times.
I put a rebuilt 12-Bolt Corp 3.73 [open] diff on last summer to replace the Eaton Posi 12-Bolt diff that got ''crunchy'' after the incident of 4/22.
Not sure I remember how many SM465s I've gone thru in 50 years? More than 3, maybe.
Put the original L6 - 292 [RPO L25] back in the truck following a high performance rebuild. Engine #2 (from Yuma) ran 25 years and 250,000 miles. [Valvoline Racing SAE 30, changed every 2000 miles, Kids.] Engine #3 is Engine #1 with a rebuild:
Bored .030-over, Badger pistons, Crane 260H cam, Bigger intake Valves [1.84''], Offenhauser intake, Clifford Research headers, Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM 4-bbl carb. L6 HEI, Dual Exhaust has angled [for L6] equalized crossover tube, Turbo mufflers exiting aft of tires. White spoke rims, 16 x 7'' and Cooper 235/85R16LT tires.
Project may need Frame Straightened. One-Piece Driveshaft has a big ding [post- 4/22], and must go to shop for inspection or repair. Speeds over 59 MPH produce excessive vibration.
Running the '71 GMC Jimmy as the daily driver, now.

Re: When did you buy your truck and how much?

My father bought the truck (68 SWB Stepside) in 94 for $5000. It had just been painted and fresh motor.

I have now exceeded that figure by almost 4 times in the last 6 months

I remember the auto hobby shops on a couple of bases. One at an Air Force base where my dad was stationed when I was a teenager. The other at a Navy base where I attended a technical school.

Those places were great! They had a tool cage where we could check out just about any tool you could name. We got parts at a discount from local parts stores, and they would even deliver. Even got jobber pricing on parts at the local Chevy dealer. You could also send out your block and heads for machine work. I rebuilt my first engine (a 283) as a teenager, with help from a couple of the older (mid-20s) guys, and with generous parts discounts.

Exactly. It was great. Ten percent off at the local Chevy dealer on parts. 20% off machine work at a preferred machine shop. Building an engine was about the only thing to do in Yuma, during the long hot summer. My Buddy, PK's Dad, was a GM prototype tech. I fell in with some ''Stock Car Boys.'' PK had a full Craftsman tool chest in his barracks room. We were on the Night Crew -- maintaining AV8As -- so we were off-duty in the cooler mornings.

In 2002, I needed to rebuild a 292 again. This time as a civilian, it took me 3 years to get the project back on the road.

Re: When did you buy your truck and how much?

About 20 years ago. I found it in the back of an Agricultural Magazine. "Old Farm Truck $750" I went out to look at it and he drove it out of his barn/chicken house. Muffler was rotted away, it needed tires and a tuneup. I mentioned it looked like it needed a lot of work. Is there any room to dicker?

"What were you thinking?"
"$500 Cash money, in my pocket, right here, right now"
"I think you just bought yourself a truck"

1971 GMC. It had a 307 in it until I broke the timing chain and bent every lifter in it. It now has a 305 in it. Had the transmission rebuilt 15 years ago, Cost me $400. It needs another rebuild. It sounds like a handful of pebbles in a soup can. Motor could use some work as well as it burns a little oil.

Until this past Saturday it had spent the last year to year and a half sitting in the trees. The battery was dead and would not hold a charge. All the brake and transmission fluid had leaked out and the gas tank sending unit is toast. I topped off all the fluids and replaced the battery, a little starter fluid and it started right up. All the critters who had taken up residence inside were not very happy. We took it to the car wash, vacuumed out all the mouse and chipmunk debris, washed the mud and dirt off the glass then drove it across town to have lunch.

Great place for a spare mount. I bet you could push-start cars with that.

Not trying to one-up you, but I remember some parts at the Chevrolet store were around 50% off, for example intake manifold and valve over gaskets. The average part discount was probably around 25%. There were something like 5 columns of prices in the price book, and our price was 3-4 columns away from list price. That was with me standing (and begging) at the dealer parts counter. I was just now searching for a price column example on-line, but can't find anything.

Re: When did you buy your truck and how much?

Got it in 2018 from my brother-in-law. Has been in the family since 1983. Currently undergoing a frame-off restoration, will be mostly original with a few period correct upgrades (and a few out of sight modern conveniences such as a portable GPS, inverter, a few USB ports, and Custom Autosound radio with blue tooth for phone calls.

Yeah, well that's what I remember from 46 years ago. My project then, was to build a 292 ['67 block] with as many GM HD parts I could get. Outside of a .030-over bore [and forged TRW pistons] the whole build was stock. The thirty-over was PK's idea. It did bump my cubes up to 296 C.I. At that time we just put the cast iron manifold back on with the old Monojet. Wisely, we put the OEM 292 in 3 foam-lined plywood avionics crates with screw-down lids. I kept the crates safe and tarped over. When I looked at the condition of my old 292, 25 years later -- time to rebuild -- I was amazed at its pristine state of preservation. Like archeologist Howard Carter said, when first gazing at boy-king Tut's golden toys, as they poked into his tomb after ~3000 years, ''Wondrous things.''
The 2003-05 rebuild became the 'Tut Project.'
[A performance upgrade to Offy intake, Holley R8007 390 CFM 4- Barrel and Clifford headers didn't happen til the next year, when I got a Basic Economic Opportunity Grant of $500 in college.]

[quote: MikeB:] Now that's a true gearhead! [/quote]

Yeah. I miss PK. Sorry we didn't keep in touch. Just a few years ago I tried looking him up on Military dot com, using the buddy finder. It led me to a Navy chief. We were Marines! PK would never become a Squid. Would he? Must be somebody with the same name, I figured.

I got set up with a 30% discount on everything at the Chevy dealer I dealt with. I forget which column it was, Jobber or Shop maybe. Deluxe side markers for '72s listed for $12, Golden State had them for $16, and I was paying $8. I was in there every week ordering parts, finding out which parts were still available.
