327 fan setup

Working on my '66 custom camper with original 327 - does anyone know what kind cooling fan came on this engine from the factory? Did they come with a fan clutch? I have one of those fans with the flex blades and I am sure this was not the original configuration. I'm trying to take the setup back to the way it came from the factory. thanks - Rob

Here's a pic of my '65 with a 283. It's a 4 blade. Should be the same as a 327.

I switched to a 4 row radiator and 7 blade fan with clutch. I also picked up an original shroud and mounting brackets that I have yet to install. The 7 blade does a good job though, even in the Phoenix heat. If you can't find one locally, I've still got the 4 blade. Should be cheap and easy to find at a scrap yard though.

they would run a 4 blade and 5 blade . you could also get a clutch fan setup with 5 blade . they all used the shroud .

BBob, which clutch fan did you buy if you don't mind. Did it have a themostat? Where'd you get it? Also does a 4 row fit in the stock brackets? Thanks

4 row has different brackets up and down and the pads are different from the others. the tanks on the 4 row are 3.5" the others are 3.0"

I have no idea what clutch it is, I bought it used. It's actually a Champion 3 row (CC284). Had to look it up, it's been a while. I like the look of the old radiators, but the price was right, so aluminum it is! It fit perfectly in the saddles, but I had to get a new top hose because the old connection was in the center, and the new was on drivers side. For anyone with the same challenge, I got the hose from O'Reilly's part number 20607.

Where did you buy the radiator? Is it a desert cooler. I would like a 7 blade fan without the clutch. Where can I get one?

I got the radiator on ebay. You can get a 7 blade fan at any parts store. I do like that the clutch gets the fan a little closer to the radiator. Here's a little eye candy for ya.

I'll defer to Yelmer on this but I think the determining factor on the fan configuration was the transmission on your Custom Camper. The TH400 auto got the bigger, 4 row radiator. Not sure if the stick did or not. Mine has the TH400, as does Yelmer's, with a shroud. My fan is 6 bladed.

The OP's truck also has AC which I think would require a better fan than typical. I'm not sure if it would have been a clutch fan, but highly possible.

So is the 7-blade fan with a thermal clutch the ultimate solution for the best cooling (with A/C)? Although I understand how it works mechanically, guess I am not totally sure how the fan clutch affects the cooling. When the clutch heats up, the fan turns slower, right? So is the idea that too much airflow is a bad thing? I really want to thank everyone to some great replies to my post. PS: BBob, that's a good looking engine - is that in your ride now?

I didn't know clutch fans were available on 66 pickups. I've been wrong before but I thought they were a later development, no?

Here is a very oil untouched 65 c20 327 that had a 5 blade fan with a clutch. Here are before and after photos, havent put the fan back on yet.

The Chevrolet parts book lists the clutch for 1965 1966 3883158 with Air Cond and HD Radiator. Was able to find clutch fans for trucks back to 1961 although rarely seen on trucks.

The standard HD fan was a fixed 5 blade no clutch. This fan is shown in the 64-66 factory Air Conditioning instruction manual. Heres a picture on a factory air 1966 292 .
