Re: Fram oil filter failure.

Not all of the oil runs through the filter.Only a % of to does.Stone cold none of it is filtered.it has a bypass.

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

For full disclosure only filter I ever notice any "problem" with was the Mobile1 synethic filters with that super small micron filtering.

But wasn't a real problem on their end.

I used them when I first got my Firebird- 168,000 miles on it [over 230,000 now]. Soon as I would see my oil PSI drop, I knew it was time to change the filter.

I did that about 5-7 times till it stopped and then went back to reg filters.

I would like to see proof of this, The By-Pass will only open if the Pressure Differential across the filter media is great enough.

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

I agree the bypass is there for a clogged filter so the engine doesn't starve for oil in case some idiot decides to never change the oil. I plugged the bypass on my last couple engines.

Pops , would do a little differently...spin the filter off after a bout 2000 miles, replace with new, & add "fresh oil"....what he drained out of the DD ride! That old 327 had about 200,000 miles on it & still ran ok/no smoke. The frame had rotted so bad, on all 4 corners....you did not know where the old 66 chev wagon would go on/off throttle, or on the brakes! Longhorn

^ only "filter" thing you see allot around these parts, is no air filter. farm trucks with million miles that didn't have a air filter for 20 years still pullin stumps. [though rusted to sh...t from the winter salt]

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

Anyone here use a Frantz toilet paper oil cleaner? I bought one at a auction. So I installed it on a 250 chev engine. And after using it for several years Ive determined that it actually does what the manufacturer states it will.

I have two of them in the shop that I haven't had a chance to install yet. My research led to testimonies that they work very well for a bypass filter, which was more important when I had diesels.

If you use them on a gas engine you could probably get-by with any cheap full-flow spin-on filter !

there is quite a extensive thread about the Frantz filters over on the Hamb. I came to the conclusion that they do the same exact thing that a Luber Finder does on a semi truck. Its a oil cleaner that filters only a portion of the oil. you need to use John Wayne toilet paper for it to work properly.

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

Had one of those toilet paper filters on a old stovebolt straight 6 many many many MANY moons ago. It was surely better than NOTHING! But...That was when toilet paper WAS 60 grit. With the way todays TP falls apart.. I'm not sure it's such a good idea. Maybe the industrail strength paper from the local public restroom,, but not the Charmin!!!

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

Use some fabric sheet for a pre filter, strong tight random fibers, keeps the engine smelling fresh

I have wondered that also. Only thing worse than John Wayne is that public restroom wax paper. Rather have sandpaper that cleans

That said, we have been making filters like this since 1962, over 2 billion sold. Today, AC Delco filters use similar construction only the end cap is felt. I know because we make them. Honda, Subaru, Nissan, Bentley, Mercedes, Porsche, and BMW all use this style of construction as OE filters. we make some, other companies make some, every company outside of WIX is adopting the non metallic end cap style of filter. Our filters are made in Ohio and Illinois, not farmed out someplace.

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

Wix man mostly. Neighbor recommended it after I commented about one on his log splitter. So far so good.

Interested in outcome here tho...

Gotta add I about fell out of my chair seeing the emoticon with the umbrella raining down something. iPhone small screen. Good imagination.

Re: Fram oil filter failure.

The "store brand" filters made by Wix are not the same filter. I verified this through Wix last week after receiving one of the many "store brand" cases of filters. The distributor took them back and replaced with Wix. There is more (and better) filter media in the Wix branded filters.

If the posts still exist, you will find that Bob (As in Bob of Bob is The Oil Guy)(RIP) did not bash the orange filter of doom, and did not discourage its use.
One thing Bob did have an issue with was too-fine a filtering media that it became a restriction to oil flow.

Alex.
