Finding rust

Usually the trucks I part out just have rust under the mat also. I parted out one that you could put your foot through!! No rust under the 70, just lot's of money I can't spend. When were stamp's .22cent's??? I figured it has been there for about 15 years??

You might try contacting your local bank that sells American Express travelers checks. Since they are signed they might be yours now. They can run the numbers and see if they were reported lost or stolen. Might be a finders fee for the return of them too.

ok. i work for a bank, and found out that they are good indefinitely. if they were reported lost or stolen, then they are no good. american express should be able to tell you if they are still valid, but if you go into an american express store, they can confiscate them. those appear to be signed only once, which, means that the person didn't correctly "assign" them to anyone. that also means that they are no good. they have to be signed on two locations, and the signatures have to match. anyhow, if you have any questions, let me know. thanks

What would I do with them? I'd have my sister check the numbers to see if they were good. If not, then they are just an interesting find to go in your collection of stuff found in trucks.

If they are good the only person that can add the second signiture is the same person that signed them originally. Anything else may result in a trip to the crow bar hotel. I'd turn them in if they are good. Might get a reward or the very least you would know you helped someone get their lost money back. Maybe if they can't be returned you would have a claim on them. Your sister should be able to find out the proceedure.

If you buy a house you buy the house the whole house and everything thats in the house. You get the problems and the good stuff too. Same with a car. As soon as the ink on the title is dry you own the whole kit and kaboodle .

I have a hard time imagining that an attorney or more importantly a judge would agree.

Why would either be involved? Was there theft? No. The truck was sold with signed travelers checks under the floor mats. Travelers checks that had been there for 15 years or so. It doesnt seem likely that they were stolen. Travelers checks are the equivalent of cash. Assuming that they were not stolen and reported as missing and therefore not worth the paper they are printed on they are cash equivalents. No different than bearer bonds in that case. I would check with american express to see if they had been reported as stolen or lost. If not then cash away. Certainly I wouldnt like it if it were my travelers checks that were left signed and under a floor mat but I wouldnt be so stupid as to do something like that.

This is such an unlikely scenario you have to wonder whether this is just some goofy morality test of sorts. Ive seen people do stuff like this before on websites so it really wouldnt surprise me. Morality is such a subjective thing. One mans morality is another mans lunacy . How do most of us feel about the religious laws in the middle east? To them they are standing the moral high ground . To us they are incipid pagans living in the middle ages . Thats why we have civil laws and codes of conduct spelled out in law. To remove the vagueness. I dont see that any laws are being violated here.

Talking

I agree, a friend baught a 72 c10 custom for 2500 that looked like atleast 4. When he got it home the 100 mile trip he checked out the complete truck, under/behind the seat was a cobra cb, perfect working order. Like Mikep said, he baught the whole truck, all the rust, in this case very little , all the problems you find out two days after you buy it, and all of the little surprises that you find. Its your property now, if its stolen, or no longer good, then its nothing more than TP, but its still yours. What if instead of them being travelers checks, it was a key to a bus station lock box, and it had $2400 in cash laying inside. Would it be wrong since the guy he baught it from forgot the key?
Or the guy that found $35.00 in change under that mat, what if the guy just forgot to get it all before he sold it? The title is signed over, the truck is now his, and everything in it. Its as simple as that.
Just my 2 Cents.

As with most slippery slopes, you can justify all you like, but it does not make it right to spend these without at least contacting the p.o. to see if he has a way to get in touch with the signee of the checks.
Perhaps contacting AMEX is the best first step. If there is a claim against these checks, they may be able to get in touch with the guy who would probably like to have them back.

hey, my.02 is worth the same as everybody elses.

BTW, If you make an honest effort to contact the original signee of the checks and and can't get in touch.......I agree, spend 'em.

If there is a claim against the checks with amex as there most likely would be then there will be no need to contact anyone. In that case they would be voided. what kind of jackass would leave $2300 worth of negotiable signed travelers checks under a floor mat? The only circumstance I could possibly imagine is an old guy on vacation who stuck them under the mat and then forgot where he put them. At that point he more than likely would have reported them lost and they'd be voided. Thats why you get travelers checks. Otherwise its so long ago that the old guy wouldnt probably even be around any more.

If it were cash would there even be a discussion here?

My grandfather found $700 rolled up into a lawn chair leg at a campground once in a garbage heap. My grandfather was the kind of guy who looked in lawnchair legs that had been left behind at campgrounds

Mike, the unfortunate part about electronic conversation is that you can't judge a person's tone of voice so I will let you know, I'm not trying to argue. I just think this is an interesting moral dilema(sp?). If it were cash, my advice would still be to contact P.O. Ask him to tell you exactly how much cash it was. If he could tell Joe exactly how much it was, I'd give it back to him.

I look at discussion forums as a way to discuss things. Imagine that . No arguing here. If you have a point of view then let it out. Its a great way to learn about others and their points of view. If everyone felt the same about everything
life would be pretty dull.

Joe, just to be fair... I think you should send one check to each member who has resonded here, and let them decide what to do with it when it's in their own hands. And my share should be two for coming up with the idea!!!

Sounds like a great idea to me...

But in mind, would try first to contact and return, but doing nothing with them vs. spending them, i think we all can answer that one.

I'm with class of 69-just trying to get my fair share:p

I can see both sides of the coin on this one, but I'd certainly check to see if the checks are still good and assuming they were, I can only hope my "lunacy" would come in to play and I'd talk to previous owner and see if he can describe how much was lost...
