Count your blessings everyday from now on. It is a miracle you are OK. It is tragic what happened to the other guy, and I hate to see your truck in such a mess. Must say something about the integrity of the 69 with no modern day crumple zone or air bags. Take care and heal up soon!

I gotta say....WOW! berencam, I am sooooo glad you are still here to share your story with us. I also gotta say I disagree with 70C10ToeJam, I think just the sheer weight of the truck helped to save berencam's life. He said that the Sable bounced and the truck stayed still. Could be that airbags and such on a newer vehicle may have lessend the injuries....The part I agree with 70C10ToeJam on is that what's important is that "A DRUNK DRIVER HIT SOMEONE, KILLED HIMSELF AND INJURED ANOTHER PERSON". I also agree with those who said somebody upstairs put that truck in the way for a reason....Sorry about the truck dude, but EVERYTHING happens for a reason. Heal quick. Dwayne

Apparently Longhorn321 is the only one who read the whole post. My point is the constant barrage against Hondas, Toyotas etc as if an Escort, Cavalier, Lumina etc would have been safer. Obviously the big strong AMERICAN Sable wasn't able to stand up to OUR trucks.

70cst---show me an american car built in the last 25-30 years that is really worth a s*%t, where reliability is concerned. they are getting better, but still not worth my hard earned cash. and since you missed it, the comment was aimed at the many comments about hondas and toyotas (or any other import car) as being the other car, as if a small or medium AMERICAN car would have faired any better.

I long for the day that one of the "Big Three" can AND will build an engine that can run with the Toyota one in my Prizm.

If bigger is better, why doesn't everyone drive a Semi??????

Re: just totaled my 69 and almost totaled me

Prism, quality...? Ill hold my laughs. But, Look at just about everything coming out of new GM before you let your toungue loose. Take a drive to a Cadi dealership, and check out the new CTS. Look at the fullsize SUVs capable of 20 mpg city with the new hybrids. GM not reliable? Your precious Toyota lost a few models from Consumer reports to below average ratings, while GM was bump in a few. Not to mention Buick tied Lexus in one other major reliability study.

But, at any rate, this is hardly the place to front about this, so, lets leave it at agreeing to disagree, eh?

Hey 70C10Toejam...you better read the most recent issue of Consumer Reports. Guess who dropped out of the top five for reliability and customer satisfaction. Can we say Toyota. And who do you think replaced Toyota? Also you got to lighten up...The cars in question in my opinion was directed at "small" in cars in general and yes you are right...no small car would have had a chance no matter the manufacturer. I find it interesting that a young man gets killed and another almost did and you complain about car bashing? I just don't get it.

toejam i dont believe people were bashing imports it was just an example of a newer small car vs larger all metal steel truck. you can insert ford focus, chevy rio, ford edge into all the honda, toyota comments if it makes you feel better. the whole honda "bashing" was just being used as an example of a small car vs big truck nothing more nothing less. reliability wasnt the discussion, size was. and no we shouldnt all drive semi's dont take it out context again ..this accident was a chevy truck vs a sable i believe was the mentioned car...

berencam i hope you fully recover i wish there was a way i could helpto get you back on the road(maybe a $1dollar donation through paypal just by sheer numbers by board members that dollar would add up dont know how that would work though but if you figure it out my dollar is definitely there).normally i wouldnt offer but this wasnt your fault..you seem like a good kid i seen your previous thread when you just installed your engine. too bad you didnt enjoy it for too long....

While you may have a few good points on your post it really serves no purpose to this thread, I really don't think brand bashing was the intent of anybody who posted here.

I think if I woke up tommrow and came back in here and re-read a post like that that I had written I would delete it and then appoligise for throwing the thread off course, but hey thats just me, I look at the whole picture before I act. I think if I garnered feelings about a few statements made in somebody elses thread I would have started a different thread on the subject, its called forum etiquette.

Sorry to hear about it. I hope there is a way to fix it or use the good parts on another truck. I just hope you get to feeling better. I hit a pole at my job and the metal bent and there was a chunk of bondo the size of a baseball that came out. is the bed in good shape? is it an 8ft bed?

Re: just totaled my 69 and almost totaled me

Your pictures are pretty sobering!! I woke up thinking about them a few times last night and for me thats pretty unusual. This sort of hits me on all fronts, from being a car guy, from losing a buddy and from being a parent of a 20 year old.
I hope you and your family are able to look back on this time as a hiccup in life and you all fully recover and continue on to enjoy a good life. I really empathis with the other family as I know the loss of a son, brother or friend never leaves you no matter how long ago.
Please know that you are lucky- I attend Insurance Auctions and see more than my share of writeoffs and know that it can take alot less damage then your truck absorbed to claim a life. Surviving that sort of puts you up there with Superman and Spiderman!
My prayers are with everyone involved- take care!!!

Hope everything goes well with your recovery. I don't even want to know how fast the other guy had to be going to bash in the front end that bad. Takes a hell of a lotta force to so much a bend the horns on one of these trucks let alone crush em. Count your blessings and get well soon.

WOW berencam ... you are going to have to do a second thread to keep us informed on your progress. This has some very intersting comments...Geeeeee even some which had nothing to do with your accident. Hopefully each day you will start feeling better. I an curious how you insurance settles on a $$$ value on your truck. Keep us updated and I am sure you will get all the help required to get you back into one of our trucks.

Prayers to you and a speedy recovery. This is a lesson learned, by my daughter. She's 8 and she asked what happened. I explained what you said. There isn't a better time to explain this and to show her the consequences and how many people get effected by drinking and driving. Take care and get well soon. Trucks are a dime a dozen, lives are priceless each.
