Dive shaft length on lowered truck

Got a question. On my '67, I'm gonna swap the motor and tranny out (probably a 383 stroker and and a th350) but I was wondering on how to measure for a new driveshaft. Do I lower it before I put the motor in, or after, and then measure for the drive shaft? I want to put a one piece in. Are there preset measurements? Not sure if I am gonna use a long shaft or a short shaft tranny. Preferably, I would like to put everything in at the same time, not have to put the motor and tranny in, then measure. Any advise would be appreciated.

I'm curious too. I can get a drive shaft cut down for 45.00, so if I can get a long one for cheap, Then I could get it cut down and have a one piece and not worry about the silly bearing. mines a swb with a 350/350 in it.

its best to have everything installed in the final position then measure according to directions from your driveshaft shop thats the only way i know of getting a proper fit the first try

With the motor/tranny installed and the vehicle at ride height (weight on the suspension), measure from the flats on the diff yoke (the center of the u-joint) to the seal on the tranny. That's how we have customers measure theirs for us, but it's probably best to talk to your local shop or who ever will be doing the work for ya.

I have a 4" drop in the rear. Shock relocators in place and the drive shaft (a 2-piece) unit is unchanged. Check with Early Classic, for example, to see what they recommend. Their catalog doesn't mention it even with a 6" drop. If you have leaf springs you may be looking at a different event. But the '96 I have, with leaf springs, is also dropped 4" with no change in driveshaft length or mounting.
