Thanks for the complement on the decoders.
Okie, SS Tim called me yesterday with some concerns about the decode I did on your truck. This morning I went through your previous posts and found the pictures of your SPID. From the pics of your SPID, I know I made a mistake on the decode. Often on SPIDs, the unique serial number was printed at a different time from the first half of the VIN and it shows with different Font and alignment. This is clearly the case on your SPID.

Your unique serial number is clearly 102079 which would make the A the model year. 1969 in this case. Sorry for any confusion my incorrect decode might of caused in relation to the year of your truck. It is a 1969.

sherm, yours is correct for a 1969 Chevy 1/2 Ton.
C = 2wd
E = V-8
1 = 1/2 Ton
4 = pickup
9 = 1969
S = St. Louis assembly plant
894367 = Unique serial number, starts at 800001. (All Chevy light duty trucks started with 800001 in 1969)
This decoder will work for yours. I left off the starting number for 1969 (800001) and 1971 (600001) on this decoder. All other years 67, 68, 70, and 72 started with 100001. (Chevrolet light duty only)

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Hi Bruceman1968!

This is a GREAT decoder!

We just picked up a 1970 GMC K20 for my son's project and I see in the VIN decoder that apparently this truck was a Cab/Chassis. I was wondering if you could help with the "F" designation so I can determine what it was originally. the frame number and the pillar tag match. The truck has been repainted, but it has a Chevrolet tailgate on a GMC, and now that I see this, there is a distinct possibility that it was used as something else before we got it. We do know that it was used to tow heavy construction equipment for most of its life.

KE203-FZ64735
MODEL KE25903

3/4T
4X4
350 V8
4 SPEED
HD F/R SPRINGS
RADIO
AMMETER, OIL GAUGE
A/C
PS
(NO PB)
7.50-16.5 WHEELS (SPLIT RIMS)
HD BATTERY
MED BLUE
L/R OUTSIDE MIRRORS
TINTED GLASS
BLUE VINYL TRIM
LOCKING FRONT HUBS

I'm mostly curious about the
"F" designation....Flatbed?

Thanks!

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Happy to help. Here is the correct VIN decoder for your 1970 GMC. The F is for the Flint assembly plant.

KE203-FZ64735
K = 4wd
E = V-8
2= 3/4Ton
03 = Cab & Chassis
- = Space reserved for special Designation
F = Flint Assembly plant
Z = 1970
64735 = unique serial number, starts at 50001 in 1970

And here is the correct model number decoder for your truck. As you can see, the 03 designates it as a cab and chassis.

KE25903
K = 4wd
E = V-8
2 = 3/4Ton
59 = 127' Wheelbase
03 = Cab & Chassis

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Thanks bruceman1968!

I was hung up on the FZ thinking the Z was for Fremont. I was mentally bypassing the dash, but now I see the Z is for 1970.

Is the "Fenderside" a pickup bed? And a Cab and Chassis something that maybe would have been given a flatbed somewhere later after delivery? Because right now, it has a pickup bed on it that APPEARS to have the same under color of paint as the rest of the truck, but since it has a Chevy tailgate..........who knows.

It does have the 127" wheelbase.

There is evidence of a plow having been attached to the front, so it very well could have been a plow truck with a sand bed on it or a water/oil tank.

Thanks again!

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Fenderside is GMC's name for a stepside bed. Your truck was originally built as a cab & chassis, with no bed on it. It could have had a flat bed added to it at the dealership or anytime after that.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Thanks bruceman1968! Very cool indeed. I was deciphering my Model number, using http://www.caaarguide.com/sub1/id442.html which had my burban listed as a 3-door wagon with liftgate. The burban has the barn doors (aka cargo doors?), so I was wondering someone had done a swap before getting to me. Your 67-72 K10 decoder ring produced this:

VIN = CKE162F145864

C = Chevy
K = 4WD
E = V-8
1 = 1/2 ton
6 = Suburban
2 = 1972
F = Built in Flint Michigan
145864 serial number

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Model KE10916
K = 4WD
E = V-8
1 = 1/2 ton
09 = 127" Longbed (Wheelbase Length)
16 = Suburban/Cargo doors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
which seems much more accurate! Thanks again!!

iriereggaeman, Glad the decoders helped you out. You have a very nicely equipped suburban there. Welcome to the forum.

I am having trouble decoding my 1967 1/2 ton 4x4 suburban. Can you help? It doesn't seem to follow any of the rules. I only have a 12 digit VIN code, and the DMV tells me it should have 14.

Kevin, While a 67 GMC could have a 14 digit VIN, the 12 digit VIN on your 67 Chevrolet Suburban is correct and clearly so !

As was indicated it breaks down as,
K Conventional Cab 4x4
E V-8 engine (base 283 in your case)
1 10 Series 1/2 ton
6 Suburban
7 1967 model year
Z Fremont California assembly plant
156477 Unit serial number

Additional SPID coded information

Paint code 451 is Medium Blue Poly (metallic) code 506, applied as a two-tone with a code 526 Ivory roof.

Model number KE10916 confirms it to be a 4x4 V-8 1/2 ton Suburban with tailgate.

Curious as to what would the other 2 digits denote if there was a 14 digit serial number on a 1967 GMC?

Its not that simple,
In a nutshell the big differences are an added GVW range as a suffix, two digit wheelbase, two digit model and a four digit serial.

To see the differences clearly just go to the begining of this thread and compare the 67 GMC to the 12 digit 67-71 Chevrolets. In 72 Chevrolets used a 13 digit VIN with an added maunfacturer digit.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

It follows the rules in the picture bruceman1968 posted at 08-02-2016, 10:16 PM above, post #108

According to your VIN and the decoder, you have a 4wd 8-cylinder 1/2-ton Suburban 1967 Fremont-built with 6 digit serial number.

That is 12 characters. DMV is mistaken (first time that has happened, probably :-).

Thanks for finding this thread and bringing it back to the top. It is interesting and informative and I'm going to bookmark it.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Can anybody help me to decode this vin?

1C154L113981

its on a 60 Apache, here in Germany.
What I found:

1 = 1961
C = 2WD
15 = 1/2 ton
4 = Pickup
L = (found Los Angeles but not for this year)#
113981 = ser. number 3981, but that be?
Could this be real?

thank you for your help.

Joerg, I also have L=Los Angles in 1959. But I can't find L in 1960 or 61. sorry, I'll keep looking.

Thank you for the information.
I have a title which shows built in 1960 but the vin says 1961.
Can you explain how this works?

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Jogre, that's pretty common. 1961s were built from August 1960 to July 1961. So a early 61 build is often titled as a 1960. Or if a late build sat on the lot till 1962, and then sold it could get titled as a 1962.
